Tip #5 Know When It's CLASS TIME!
CLASS TIME
Mrs Long mentioned in an earlier post "Class Decorum"
Let's talk about that.........
Class Time STARTS....the instant you walk through the front door and you hear the doorbell "ding"!
From that point ...you are considered "IN CLASS" and all other thoughts of what happened during your day......or what you are going to do after class, .....should be set aside, and your full attention be given to "WHY YOU ARE THERE"! Stop at the LINE...SALUTE ....
AND EMPTY YOUR CUP!
You are there to train and learn..........NO OTHER REASON...we are not a "Social Club" where you go to visit with each other and gossip about recent activities in the comnmunity...etc!
If you arrive early, and you should when you can, you should NOT WASTE that extra ten or fifteen minutes when you could be practicing your forms, basics, blocking sets, etc.
Use the time wisely while you are there to learn as much as you can DURING class..... and PRACTICE as much as you can BEFORE the whistle blows!
You will NOTE....that I said "You are there to train and learn".............You are not there to PRACTICE!
Practice should be done at home..... and before the actual instruction begins in class.
There will be ABSOLUTELY ..NO HORSE PLAY from the kids and I expect the adult students to assist me in that regard............Tactfully and respectfully...with comments like...."Mr Weeks wants us to stretch"....or..............
"IF Mr Fortson sees you doing that..you will be doing knuckle-ups" Something of that nature.
DO NOT take it upon yourself to be the DISCIPLINARIAN .....only suggest that
"WHAT THEY ARE DOING SHOULD STOP"
I will take it from there!
NOT KNOWING what is expected of us can sometimes get us in more trouble that if we deliberately TRIED to violate the rules! It's easier when you KNOW the rules.

Well said Mr. Weeks
Has anyone noticed that noone calls Mr. Weeks by his first name? After many years of being his student and friend I still introduce him, even in out of class situations, as Mr. Weeks. I can't even imagine addressing him by his first name, or even his first and last.
This is one of the ways we show respect to him.
What he is speaking of is very similar. When we enter the dojo and act like we are at home or on the playground, it is the same as calling Mr. weeks by his first name in the middle of class. We are disrescpecting the dojo, and more importantly when we disrespect the dojo we disrespect all who train there. The rank does not matter. After we have bowed in we should be in a respectful attitude toward the dojo, the facilities, the instructors, the knowledge we have come to learn, and the art. How we respect the dojo is an indicator of how we respect our art and martial arts in general.
If we act like we do on the street, in the dojo, I really must question the learning that has taken place to that point. If you even think that the action you are about to do might be disrespectful to the dojo, the instructors, or your fellow student take my advice and don't do it.
I think the term "old school" is becoming less and less needed each day. We should never need to refer to the "old school". We can make the "old school" the new school if we strive to.
I think nothing would make any of us any prouder.

I disagree Rank dose matter Be it for good or Bad upper rank needs to do it just like the
DRAGON HEART CREED DO IT BETTER... DO IT STRONGER..
DO IT LONGER.... DO IT WHEN IT COUNTS ! Be cause the lower belts look to you
and will do what you do . As for the old school we will have to turn off the A/C, let in the
mosquitos ,wet the floor and spare like it s the U.F.C . But we had a lot of respect for everyone.
At lest that's the old school I know, Mr.. Rink Mr. .Anglin will tell you of another old school.

I believe I was misunderstood. When i said "The rank does not matter", what I was saying is that all who study at the dojo are disrespected when you disrespect the dojo. Obviously all ranks should show respect at all times. That I believe is the point. Mr. Weeks wasn't just refering to the lower ranks in his tip. He was putting it out there as a tip for all ranks.
