Heavy Bag Training
The bennifits of heavy bag training are almost limitless.
Cardiovascular:
When you do rounds (1 to 3 minutes) of constant work on a bag it can push you past your limits.
Try to pace yourself and then give it all you've
got for about the last 10 to 30 seconds of the round.
Technical:
Use specific techniques. Hands one round, elbows the next, then nothing but head kicks, etc. You may call the techniques for speed, call the placement for accuracy or create a scenerio for pressure.
Energy:
One of the great aspect of the bag is that you can actually hit it... and hit it hard. Make sure you are prepared... wrap your hands and wrist, etc.
Try pusing on the bag for resistance... i.e. like in a clinch and pratice your dirty boxing.
Weapons:
If you have a tough enough bag and the right equipment you may use knives, sticks, swords, etc. and practice hard hitting sceneriors and repetition.
I could go on and on. Regardless, try it out. Use it in class and you will see your training raise to new heights.
Let me know what you discover.

Re: Heavy Bag Training
We do not presently have a HANGING heavy bag.......We only have the free-standing ones with the water-filled base! I realy miss the hanging bag....like we had in the old scool....now...we just do not have a way to suspend the bag....
I have thought about building a steel cage to hang the bag...but haven't done it.....
I REALLY liked working on the hanging bag....the floor-standing ones are just not the same!

Re: Heavy Bag Training
Mr. Weeks,
You are right... the free standing bags are different. They have their advantages but really do lack the hanging bag options... like the swinging, the reaction, the ability to lean and swing around... also most bases on the free standing bags are obtrusive and can limit your mobility around the bag.

Re: Heavy Bag Training
I have a heavy bag at home and can attest to the cardio aspect of this type training. I will try some of your suggestions of 1-3 minute rounds and specific techniques.

Re: Heavy Bag Training
Mike,
I believe you will like the results you will see. As big and strong as you are... I'm sure you have the bag well secured and be careful not to pull your roof down.

Re: Heavy Bag Training
It has pulled loose twice, and while my wife does not like the contraption that holds it to the ceiling now, it serves it purpose.
