Re: Up Block
An up block is usually taught within the first days of starting a martial art such as Tang Soo Do. This is because basics blocks are the foundation for all other techniques. One will not survive a combat situation with only attack techniques, one must have an arsenal of defensive moves as well. An up block is the act of stopping or deflecting an opponent's overhead striking attack for the purpose of preventing contact with the body, mainly the head, neck, and shoulders. The application of an effective technique depends on proper footwork. Speed and accuracy of your footwork leads the way for balance, effective blocks, and powerful counter attacks. Executed correctly, an up block can create a good opening for a counter-attack, such as an inverted punch to the solar plexus, or a kick to the groin area. The upward sweeping motion of the up block clears one’s body of other oncoming attacks before the final block is executed. The student should get in the habit of counter striking immediately following a block. Training to block several incoming overhead blows or use evasive footwork is training that rarely transitions to high stress self defense situations unless properly trained. When familiar with blocking and counter attacking techniques, the instructor should strike powerfully at the student. This should be followed immediately with various counter attacking techniques on striking mitts. The single best way to ensure your techniques will be effective under high stress circumstances is to perform them under pressure. Training at 100% of your speed, power, and reaction capacity will promote muscle memory with maximum blocking and knockout striking capability.

Re: Up Block
The Up block is taught as one of the five basic blocks. The block itself is versatile as a deflective motion and a strong defensive reaction. when used as a deflective motion the block is used to effect attacks with a small weapon such a knife, dagger or small club or with no weapon at all just simply the hand. The effect would be direction change of momentum of the attack such as for a take-down or joint lock to remove the weapon from the person's hand. a strong defensive reaction would be used to block if the attacker was very aggressive was no weapon at all and could possibly not be deterred by deflective motion for take-downs submission by joint lock. If charged by multiple assailants in a downward direction a double up block would be aplicable as very strong defensive reaction.
it is not seen by many but when in the fetal position ur arms form a double up block turned inward as a defensive reaction towards something physical
i can not think of anything that doesnt fit into those categories...

Re: Up Block
Lets step OUTSIDE the box and ask ourselves..."Must the up_block be the TRADITIONAL one-arm BASIC that we teach beginners?" AND "Does the up-block HAVE to be with our arms?"
?????????????????

Re: Up Block
As you showed us last night an "up block" doesn't have to be the traditional one arm block. The two armed upward wedge and lundge, or xblock works just as well. Using the bo staff or escrima sticks as an extension of ourselves also works to deflect an overhead srike.

Re: Up Block
"One will not survive a combat situation with only attack techniques, one must have an arsenal of defensive moves as well. "
I disagree to an extent. Im some cases sure this may be true. It has been said that the best defense is a good offense. This is the military mentality that I absorbed as a young man. In fact, when engaged a squadron's best defense is to overpower their adversary with superior firepower even if out manned, gunned and, inevitably with mobile units, out of ammo real soon.
A superior show of firepower " or offense" can take the sting right out of your enemy.
