Tactical Illumination

In a recent article in Combat Handguns the author sites several cases where law enforcement, home defenders, and military personel have accidentally shot and killed (seriously wounded as well) innocent people because of a lack of proper lighting.

This happens mostly at night but also in dim lit rooms where plain eye sight is hampered.

The lesson... Train, provide, and keep proper illumination with your weapon at all times. Keep a nice flashlight by your bed along with your shot gun. Always illuminate first so you id the would be intruder.

There are many good articles out there which cover good technique for holding a light with your weapon.

I encourage all of you to check it out.

There are many lights made for handguns and rifles as well. Most modern handguns have a mounting rail that can accomodate many different types of lasers and tactical lights. The only sure way to be proficient with it is to practice with it. Many of the police swat teams and tac teams are moving away from pressure switches as they are prone to accidentally giving away your position if tapped at an bad time. The guys at the JPD had chosen to mount their lights closer to their hand on the quadrail, that way they can push the switch at the right time. Practice sight-aquire-fire with an empty weapon in a dim or dark room. Know your weapon and the location of its safeties, switches, and how tp properly reload in a dim room. The NRA has several great home and personal defense courses. In he words of Richard Marcinko, follow the rule of the seven P's (Proper Previous Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance).
