An insight as to my work-life in England

As most of you know, I moved to England late March. I just thought I'd share a little bit of what I do over here.

I work with young people. Their ages vary from 8-18. Each case is specific to the child's needs. Some have very minor problems, whereas some have very severe problems. The problems can be anything from neglect, bullying, school work, disorders (any kind but mostly apserges, downs, adhd, odd et cetra), to extreme cases of violent histories, phsyical/mental/emotional/sexual abuse. I am a mentor, working with the mentees. Depending on the child, I take them out and do various activities helping them to gain life skills and build trust. Through our short relationship, they learn that not all people are going to hurt them, betray them or neglect them. Also how to function in the world by managing money and their time. It is an ever learning experience for me. And recently, I joined a parenting group to assist further. Here is a brief explanation of that. Hey! I just wanted to say that I am doing very well and wanted to tell you I joined a parenting group to help out. They needed a male perspective for their younger group and I was asked to help out. Little did they know, I would surpass all expectations emoticon

Well for the parenting group, I worked with five social workers. Two took the parents (12), two took the children ages 8-12 (6), and another girl and myself took the children ages 13-16 (5). This was their second session, one a week. I guess last week's was terrible, no one talked and they had a lot of troubles with people focusing. This week, with my presence, it went better than they had ever seen before. I was praised with compliments! Especially when the girl, Naz, asked how much experience I had in social work, when I replied none. She, and the other five said they had never seen someone of my age, especially given I have no experience lead a group. It was really a lot of fun, and the teenagers responded to me well. It was a parallel group, so all 3 groups talked about the same subject, adolescent growth and behavior. And all 3 groups tried to reach a similar goal, of making our group understand how others perceive the young persons growth and how they feel about their growth. It was a really great experience for me. I was able to teach these kids about their own boundaries, stereotypes, generalizations. Basically tricking them to be comfortable and talk about their experiences and views. Then making them realize how one-sided they can be. Such as we did classifications of people. They listed; Nerds, Goths, Emos, Chavs, Gangsters, Wanabe Gangsters and normal people, we then listed defining characteristics and traits of these groups. After I got their minds wrapped around these stereotypes. I explained to them how people talk and act differently around different groups, example given was how they talk to their friends, opposed to their parents. All in all, it was a really great experience for me to learn that I am well able to teach others. Naz kept telling me how impressed she was with my ability to arbitrarily lead and then give her the reigns again. Her and I worked very well together with this group. I have five more weeks of working with them as well, every tuesday! I am excited to see this through. Hope that covers it!

If anyone wants to know more, just hit me up either on here, in mud, ask for an e-mail or whatever. Talk to you all soon!

Wow, that is pretty cool. I was wondering exactly what you were doing over there.

Is this some independant organization running this or what?

I suppose it is also interesting to them to have an outsider with a funny accent there too, huh?

It's run by Community Service Volunteers (CSV). They are the largest volunteer organization in the United Kingdom. The parenting group I assist in, is run by the Bedford Youth Offending Service (BYOS). Both work hand in hand to provide social care and support for the young people in need and of course their families.

I love to hear about what people do in real life. It is also cool to show people that this is a role playing game so evils on board can have good hearts and souls.

It is very neat the work you do, I'm curious to see, how they change your life, you know they will touch it in many ways (your mentees).

It definately does show that people aren't just some warmonger on the other end of the line, they are real people.. I wish more people would realize that in mud...

I think mud is like driving. You do things you wouldn't normally do in real life. Maybe that's what makes it so addictive.

Anyhow, keep up the good work tes.
