Sinking of HMS Canberra!

Anyone going to watch the sinking of the HMS Canberra this Saturday coming? Hubby and son have booked a place on a charter boat with Dive Victoria, and hubby will be taking film footage of the sinking. Later they intent to do a dive somewhere. Six weeks after the dive, once the ship has settled into the silt around 2 metres they expect, it'll be ready to dive on. It's being sunk just outside Queenscliff, somewhere near Ocean Grove i believe. I have to work that day, darn it, or i would be going too. emoticon

Anyway, hopefully the weather will permit the sinking, it's all that might stop it from happening. Can't wait to dive on it!

emoticon Eeek! They've cancelled on the sinking of the Canbera. Apparently the weather hasn't been what they expected for the last 10 days. The water looks to be not as calm as they would have liked to see. So disappointing. Garry got a call last night from Dive Victoria, who told him the news. They're going to re-schedule for another date now. It's not the first time it's been cancelled like that. Ah well. At least he and son keep their booking on the boat..... Maybe if there's a further cancellation on a booking..I can get in then!

It finally happened on Sunday 4th october 2009! The HMAS Canberra was finally sunk as an artificial reef and dscuba dive site. After 24 years of service she was scuttled at 2:00pm, after a good 4 hour wait on board a dive charter boat. hundreds of people lined the Ocean Grove beaches to watch the event, and many boats of all types were out on the water, also waiting for the inevitable. It took 16 underwater explosives fired into her hull to sink her. Parks Victoria will advise divers when it will be safe to dive on after some time and inspections.

We took film of the ship sinking, so didn't get the actual sinking so much on photos...but here are a few of the day. It was a four hour wait, and when the ship went down, it did so nice and evenly all round as planned. They ran into a problem with the weather; there was a bit of a swell and the ship kept moving out of position, but finally the sinking took place! The red smoke in one of the photos are flares going off, letting everyone know the detonation was to happen. 16 explosives were used to open up the hull, and it's through these holes also that divers will be able to penetrate the wreckage. It was a great day out on the water...and worth the wait. First pic of me and my son about to board the dive boat Ocean Diver, with the Dive Victoria Group.

I'll post a link from Youtube here so you can watch a close-up of the sinking taking place. The footage was taken by another diver.
