Hi drew the bottom drawing is the same as what we used when we were diving and setting piers only we used air to create the suction and believe me did it suck my mate got his arm sucked up into the air lift once and had his rolex drawn off his wrist,he got it back ok but we used 6" pvc pipe it would be ideal for the beach but you would have to have the compressor up in a boat or on a float the gold guys were using the same set up.keen dredges use the same nozzel.terry

Hi all,

Several months ago I made my first attempt at making a straight shaft for my Infinium, I have the control unit chest mounted.

There were some problems with using this shaft, resulting in a decision to make another one.

As first suggested by teejay7; I found it very convenient to use components from an “Elbow Crutch” (one discarded by my wife), as shown in the accompanying pictures.

This MK 2 version is both lighter and neater with a new balance weight, comprising a small glass jar (containing some lead fishing weights).

This is attached by it’s screw-on metal cap, to an adjustable telescopic section, which is much more convenient to adjust, with pre-existing increments of 25mm of movement.

The main section of this “Elbow Crutch” was straightened and inverted to form the lower part of the new shaft; a short piece of aluminium tube was pressed tightly into this new section and secured with pop rivets, this then fits into the existing metal section of the original shaft.

The lower adjustable telescopic section of the “Elbow Crutch” then became the upper part of the new shaft.

The new hand grip was placed in the same location as on the old shaft, as was also the case with the original arm rest cup.

The end result is a new straight stem with a very comfortable handle, the balance weight section is easy to adjust to suit my coils; while also compensating for the buoyancy effect when coils are submerged.

The balance weight needed is less, because this section increases the length by 200 mm, making an overall length of 2000mm (measured to the tip of the 10" x 14" coil) when fully extended, the closed length being 1775mm; I do not consider that the length will be a problem.

Best Wishes, Brian.

Great post Brian! Thanks for sharing!
