Cleaning and disposal of coins
I have just come back from my local St George Bank. After 4Yrs they didn't want to take my coins, they said they were discolored, and they would have to be sent to the Mint as damaged coins and i would only get scrap value for them, and that would take about 12 weeks. I guess you all no what my reaction was. I bought them home to sort them better, and cash the better ones..
What do you all do with the discolored ones, I have used " BAM " and the dirt's gone, but the coins are still a bit pale, wire buffing is a bit fiddly with such a small coin. and when i buff the silver ones they still look a bit on the black side.
I think i will have to buy a small tumbler, BUT, Before i do that, What suggestions do you all have on the disposal of coins. All suggestions will be appreciated. Bob

G'Day Terry, do you bag them and hand them into the bank to get real Paper money. Bob

Re: Cleaning and disposal of coins
Hi Bob
I use a tumbler, it is the easiest way for bulk coins, check my previous post on page 7 re tumbler with pictures of process even the most discoloured coins are spendible after effortless process. You can bag them and bank them with out any issues then. Also coin person on radio this week said mint would give full value if coins are ledgible, amount of damage depreciates damaged coins so discression of mint to work out value. Popeye

Re: Cleaning and disposal of coins
hungry1,
Following PopEye's advice, I now effectively clean my coins with a tumbler.
I bag them by denomination and make up a list itemising the contents of the bags.
I always take my coins to the Commonwealth Bank, where I present them with the list for deposit into to my credit card account; they are always accepted, I am then provided with fresh coin bags.
Until fairly recently the bank had a weighing machine that calculated the value of 1 & 2 cent coins.
Since there was no need to count the coins; I was then able to include "clipped" and part coins for inclusion, so long as the weight was correct, the monetary value was accepted without question.
Unfortunately, new machines have been recently introduced that are not capable of calculating these coins.
Consequently I continue to bag them without including badly damaged coins, since the teller has now to actually count the coins.
Really crappy coins can be fed into parking meters and poker machines; providing they are not significantly damaged or are under weight.
Have fun, Best Wishes, Brian.

Re: Cleaning and disposal of coins
Poker machine venues are good.Get the cashier to change them for good ones then walk out the door. Our local woolworths has counters where you serve yourself. I bought some stuff the other day for $35 paid for it in 20cent pieces. It took a while spat out a few really bad coins but I got rid of most of them. I still have about $40 of ten cents to get rid of yet that might take a bit longer. I went into our local bank with somebags of coins which I had counted and cleaned. The woman who was counting them asked me where I had got them, I told her metal detecting on beaches or parks. She looked at them as is they were poison and said they will have Dogs wee on them. I told her they were all washed in detegent but she was still not happy. I guess she was Peed off. seeya Neilo

Re: Cleaning and disposal of coins
Following on Neil's suggestion, If the dollar coins are clean & undamaged why not grap a pokie cup from the change machine then empty your dollar coins into it grab a free coffee and biscuit, make like your a pokie addict drink your coffee dunk a bicky or two then just cash in at the counter on the way out

Re: Cleaning and disposal of coins
Just ordered my Lortone T3A tumbler from Gemcut, in Ballina NSW. $175 + postage $13. This should shut the banks up.
Thanks everyone for your input, Bob
