I don't use knee pads....but I'm sure as hell considering them.
15 years of lugging my house on my back with the army has left my knees a bit average!!

works well for shallowish coins but deeper ones are a real challenge using this method, also can cause damage to coins real easy..... used it when chasing the goldies but not when hunting the pre-decimal coins for the reason mentioned
