Cleaning Pre-decimal/old coins

For the old coins that are not really worth anything and you want to make them look nice.....how do you guys clean them?

I'm good for modern coins and will get a tumbler one day, but this question is aimed at non-valuable pre-decimals.

I use the ultrasonic for silver to get the dirt off and then lemon juice to shine them up with some success.

As for coppers, the ultrasonic tends to take the corrosion 'nodules' off leaving pits in it's place...makes the coin very ugly. I have been soaking over night and then a brush with a toothbrush, that's it.

What do you guys do?

Cheers,
Greg

I use WD40 with a soft toothbrush on copper and silver coins. I've also tried soaking copper coins in coke and it works to some degree. the sugar works on the grren crud you get with beach found coins. For larger type relics you can try a mixture of molasses and water, and soak the relics for a few weeks. Some farmers use this method here to clean their tools, etc.

I also use a tumbler for cleaning modern currency if a toothbrush and soapy water doesn't work.

Hi Greg
Go back to Aprils posts (page 10, General), there are photo's and descriptions of tumbler methods for old coins that are not the valuable type, unfortunately the pits are there for ever no matter what method you use. I look at them as the wrinkles of time on a coin. LOL
