E-trac Tip - Long/Smooth tones
This one is for the E-trac owners out there. You may know this already....but I've only just worked it out
Was on Findmall and a guy was preaching about Long tones and that he was having more sucess in trash/high iron. He's onto something......
First up flick to page 63 in the manual and have look. What you will quickly pick up on is that Normal and Pitch Hold both clip off the tail end of the detection, however, Long and Smooth dont. From all reports Long/smooth tones is allowing a lot more to be found in high trash. Even the manual says you will find more, achieve greater accuracy and more depth but should not be tried by a newbie.
I've given these audio settings a go at an old house I've been over four times with the E-trac. Within 20 minutes I had 4 coins (2 Pre-decimal), couldn't be happier.
Some funnies with these audio settings though! Within 1 hour of using these settings I dug a ghost hole with very good two way signals. The other is that pinpointing can be way off due to being so close to other targets, field is getting pulled by close targets. Guys on other forums are having the same two issues. But thay are now finding more coins in return.
If you have an e-trac in high trash or iron, Long or Smooth Audio are awesome.......but take a litte getting used to. Recommed do some air tests to get a feel for the audio. Also, recommend a tight pattern with this to begin with or it will get overwhelming. Take it slow!
Cheers,
Greg

Re: E-trac Tip - Long/Smooth tones
I've used these tones on a few sites so far and it was ok.
The latest site I tried these tones it was bloody horrible....went back to normal.
Use it on a site by site basis.
Cheers

Re: E-trac Tip - Long/Smooth tones...
Hi Greg,
I like all these finds you've been posting. Site looks like the sort of place for a Aussie 1930 penny or a 1924 half penny or who knows?? Best of luck with your search.
Some of the audio reactions that you can get from the varying setups of the Explorers and the Etrac can drive one nuts and really off putting. Takes some getting used to. Over time, I have found that on the Etrac and the Explorers, at certain sites, that I had to pick the coils to use long or smooth option with. Works fine with the stock coil but as soon as I have moved off to say the Platypus ,8inch M/L, Joey, 15 inch WOT, 10x14EQ or 4x7 EQ there are more varying settings to work with and using the detector needs another approach...similar but , tailored for the relevent coil being used.
I have never ever been able to use the 1 or Normal settings of the Explorer/xs/2/SE or the Normal setting of the Etrac. Using the default option's have slowed me down with no advantage , but are the best option to start on to learn to use any of these detectors. I also found that when looking in iron laced sites, that a deep off and fast on setting works well for me on the smaller coils and usually when using an all metal(limited discrimination) setup. To search with the many sounds that occur,I use the full GAIN(30 for the Etrac) and reduce the over all volume and listen out for the repeatable higher tones in Sounds Ferrous. Not always the best way to detect and a tight pattern on the Etrac will also work very well.
Like you suggest ...settings on a site by site basis.
That target you detected in that "ghost hole" could have been anything. If your not patient enough to continue searching some of these targets then you might want to consider getting the most basic electronic pinpointer you can(uni probe or X-1 are good ones, though there are cheaper ones around) and re check with that. I would have left a lot of good targets behind and messed around with a lot of targets that were trash(using all metal), if it were not for a hand held pinpointer. Some sites are just too difficult to dig in and a hand held probe can really help.
