posticon Lake Wivenhoe 26 Aug 05

Hi All,
went out to Wivenhoe this afternoon just before 1pm to have a afternoon session. Passed 2 boats on the way who had caught nothing but catties so the news wasnt great.

Got my first bass of the session 20 minutes in, a good sign I thought. The bass took a jackall tn-70 in about 35 ft of water. Not a huge bass that the damn is known for but a nice 40cm healthy fish.

Headed out to deeper water in front of the logans to look for some schooled fish. Wind picked up and decided to do a drift and cast while moving. Got 1 Cattie but no bass. Trolled some deep banks around logans for nil result.

Sorry Ross for missing you, I got there by 1245. Would of been good to catch up.Let me know if you are heading out there again and I will see if i can make it.

Heres a pic of the bass with the lure beside the yak.

Cheers
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

The other two boats were just ahead of me this morning and I'm pleased to hear that I wasn't the only one catching 100% Forkies.

Anyway, maybe we cleared them out a bit so that Bass could get a crack at your lure (well done, by the way).

I presume you saw my earlier reply to you under "Fishing Reports".

I'm tied up next weekend so it'll be a couple of weeks before I get back to Wivenhoe but I'm sure we'll catch up one day.

Regards,

Ross

Hi All,

Thanks for the encouragement. It is a big dam and can be quiet hard to fish sometimes. For those that dont live in S.E QLD Wivenhoe dam is one of brisbanes main water supply. When full it has over 250km of shoreline. Right now it is about 35% but in places is still 80ft deep.

The dam dosnt have alot of structure, bugger all timber or wedbeds so locating fish in a ocean of water can be daunting. You are only allowed electric, paddle or sail power on the dam so for a big dam it isnt as fished as down the road at Somerset. Wivenhoe has produced some of the biggest bass caught in Aust with regular catches of 50cm + fish that exceed 3kg. It also has Yellowbelly, saraotga, silver perch and mary river cod. There is millions of fork tail catties that drive you mad in summer, gar, bony bream, banded grunter and talapia in the dam as well as lungfish and turtles.

I am hoping to one day catch a bass in excess of 3 kg.Winter is the time to fish due to the catties slowing down and allowing bass th getto your lures. In summer I have caught over 60 catties in 2.5hrs which some would say fun other like me a pain in the butt.

Might have another go out there this thursday morning before late shift.

Cheers
Aaron
