Kayak colours - does it matter

HOOORRRRRAAAAAYYYYY!

I am finally in the process of starting the layby process on my own yak - yehaaaa. Prowler 13

Think i would prefer a green colour but i have a few queries regarding colour

1. do bright colours spook timid fish like bream? They will one of my staple fish so i don't want to spook the species i am trying to catch the most.

2. Guessing bright colours help D***head boat driver see you when are flying down the waterway - Bent1 seems to have had some experience with these guys. but then again i have to admit i have nearly run over a kayaker in my dads tinnie in low light in the early morning (just couldn't see them)

3. Do brighter colours maybe make you look less like a prey item on the surface. could a dark green yak maybe look like a large elephant seal or something like that?

any information on the topic would be great - cheers people and hope to see you out there sooner rather the later

---
Cheers

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter

Hi Gatesie,

Schweeet !

My personal opinions are:

1).. Nope. Paddle splashes or banging things on the deck will scare them more than the colour.

2).. Yep, sure will but if you decide a bright kayak isn't for you supplement the visibility issue by a bright PFD, yellow paddle blades, fluoro yellow or orange clothing etc.

3).. Makes no difference. Divers call yellow 'yum yum yellow' 'coz they reckon more sharks attack yellow than any other colour but I dunno. Is that because it does attract them more or because there are simply more hi-vis yellow items being used in the watersport environment than any other colour ?

Just my opinion.. I reckon Bent will dis-agree with some of it though emoticon

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter

Thanks for the speedy reply Phil.

It does seem there are a lot of yellow yaks out there. I had in mind the green but mum and the girlie would prefer i was in a brighter coloured vessel - they feel it would be a more safe colour. thats why i was asking for some advice as whether it really is a more safe colour or is it just a couple of females getting all motherly on my as*e.

thanks again

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter

Mate i went the olive because personally and i repeat personally i think bright colours scare fish. As Phil said though, so does a bad paddle stroke.

I prefer to dress myself in a high vis PFD. I went a black bladed paddle for the same reason, (didn't want fluro blades in the water while breaming)

Again though possibly i am loosing a source of early detection by boaties by not having fluro blades although a lot of long liners use black floats as they say it gives them good visibility at sea.

A bright coloured flag from a spare rod holder could improve the vis of your yak but you would look like a tool.

I think it comes down to a compromise between safety and fish catching ability. I went for the lesser safety but more fish catching in my opinion but again it is only my opinion and i do not want to influence your decision, just detail my thoughts.

Regardless of what colour boat you end up with, love it and fish it hard.

bright colours (ie yellow) dont scare fish
I caught a bream lastweek under my yak in 5 ft of water and my yak is YELLOW...
just ask phil
Personally saftey overrides missing out on a couple of fish (not that u would) because of yak colour

I think getting run over by the local yob going fishing with his mates would ruin your day more than a bright coloured yak..

In my experience a bright coloured yak has absolutely no effect on your fish strike rate.
I've fished small fresh water creeks in a bright red/yellow yak and had Bass hit my rig within a couple of feet of the hull.
Same in open water. I had a Spotted Mackerel slam a Halco Twisty that was dangling in the water right at the side of my orange/yellow Swing.
Bright colours mean higher vis. on the water, which means improved safety. A yellow paddle blade helps too.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter

Hi Guys, i have to argue with you here at least as far as estuary fishing goes. Bass are the top of the food chain in their enviroment, hence the fact they are scared off very little. I have caught them trolling lures in close to a petrol motor.

Small bream are aggressive and a lot more stupid than a trophy (40cm + fork length) bream. When i first started fishing a few bream comps, i was warned by an old timer to dull the bottom of my new tinny (un-painted) using vinegar.

This improved my average bream size dramatically. My PB lure caught bream is 57cm. i have been bream spinning for over 15 years. i have caught and released literally thousands of trophy bream. My Pb catch is 64 bream in a session using SPs.

A big bream is a shy cautious fish which does have natural predators in their system hence the fatc they are a lot more cautious than a bass.

I will argue with anyone that bright colour affects bream and trout. That is why fly vests are not fluro yellow, they are tan or olive. A ocean scenerio can not be compared to a shallow water estuary enviroment.

One bream doesn't prove a point.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter

good point bent. As a relative beginner I am always keeping a ear or eye out on making the odds favourable for me. so i read these posts and any other articles to see how i can improve fishing be it catch more or enjoy the experience. I am looking forward to getting ideas on rod reel combinations for use in the kayak and seeing what works and what is not as successful for me. What i have found out is a rod 6"6 is just a tad long and i used my g/f's G Loomis Bronzeback at 6"3 today and maybe a 6" rod is the answer but will keep trying both to get a good idea.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter

to everyone that replied,

I am stoked you disagree. it means my uncertainty is not unwarranted. I have to say a lot of the bream on SP's that i have caught have been in 1-2 feet of water. Very visual and awesome fishing.

Personally i would prefer to get a green coloured yak and wear a PFD with reflective tape on it when fishing more open water the miss out on fish in the skinny stuff.

Really guys thanks for the imput.

PS Billbob one of my best friends work in sails in noosa and said she has seen you having photo's taken out the front of the restaurant.

cheers boys
