Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
I went for a blue/white kayak because I believe that this will blend in with the sky better.
My main bugbears at the moment have been paddle splash and incorrect positioning on the snags, so I can't blame the yak for that!
I definitely go for the hi-vis clothing (I use my cycling gear) when I am going from A to B, but I put something more stealthy over the PFD when I get closer to the snags. I have to contend with waterskiers where I go though, they demand much more caution!
Yet another reason to be in tight to the snags - I am pretty sure that people can't go through a logjam with a powerboat!

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
Wasn’t there a show on TV recently (myth busters or something) which tested the yum yum yellow theory with sharks?
I have always caught fish from my shiny-hulled boat, but I guess the question is would I have caught more if the colour was more subtle. Undoubtedly it would depend on the conditions you are fishing in.
In deep or murky water my craft would simply look like a dark shape on the surface regardless of the colour. Shallow clear water I guess the fish could be spooked by something brightly coloured. Pelicans are white underneath so as to mimic the brightness of the sky when fish look up. Maybe we should be looking at getting white Kayaks

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
thanks again guys
spoke to the Kayak guy at my local store and have changed my order from the flame to the sky coloured yak. thanks again for all the help.
I would rather wear bright colours equipment and be able to remove it when approaching snags then limit my options permanently - especially since i expect it will be a while before i venture into harbour proper.
cheers

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
I saw the same show as Greg about the colours and sharks and all the colours were under water so the were easily seen. It's like the way we fish at night with lures , we use black.
Only so that there is a shape(silouette) above the fish that sparks their territorial instincts , i'm guessing a yak will do the same as there is only colour when light bounces off of it. So looking at it that way it would only be a dark shape from underneath
Fish would see the lure with a colour more (perhaps) as it is at or near it's level with light coming off of it.
cheers

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
I have drifted straight over the top of Bream and Trout and polaroid fished for both Species out of a fluro yellow and green kayak and caught tonnes of both, and these are supposed to be very flighty fish. Also if you watch the ABT those tournament guys are fishing out of all sorts of coloured boats, and they make a living out of it. Also, if you think about it, most Bream fishing is done with plastics these days using fluro coloured Fire line, with a couple of meters of Flurocarbon leader- much closer to the fish than the kayak! As in all fishing aspects, confidence in your gear is what catches more fish I reckon.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
Mate, look at the colour of the bottom of the ABT boats hull, (below the waterline) and its aluminium and most of them use the vinegar trick, that where i got it from. they use bright hulls to better display their sponsors. Try fireline without flurocarbon and see how many fish you catch. No one said you won't catch fish from bright coloured hulls, just you will get the bigger more educated fish on a more regular basis.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
Hi guys, i have been reading an article on South African Andre Hartman. He is reconised as the worlds leading authority on white sharks by the world white shark researchers all of whom have spent a lot of time with him. He is the poineer of using his bare hands to open their mouths, free diving with them and also getting towed by them by hanging on the their dorsal fins. I will include a few quotes from him relevant to kayak colour and also to preventing an inquisitive white from thinking you are edible.
He says you need confidence around them and not to act like prey here is a direct quote "If you panick and try to get away, thats big trouble and will provoke an attack response"
He says that you cant force a white to do anything you must manipulate it using its own curiosity and instincts. He says, "they touch things to estimate nutritional value and you must have something hard in your hand so when it comes to see of you are edible you nudge it with a hard object like a unloaded spear gun" (think kayak paddle guys). He says that they have no feeling behind their head so the snout is where to direct a tap to deter it.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
continued, had to continue this here as my keyboard just got flat batteries. he also says that'yellow attracks sharks we don't have any yellow objects in the water even ropes as it gets the sharks too excited. he [hartman] charged a 10 foot white which was coming behind a camera man, scaring it away. he said that 'it was after the camera man because of the yellow on his wetsuit hood. i advised him not to wear it because of the colour but he scoffed at me'. remember my comments about how we couldn't use our yellow sea anchor while sharking as it would get attacked while the blue one wouldn't. remember that divers and game fishos call yellow yum yum yellow. if you guys want to take that chance go for it, i won't argue with my own observations and i certainly won't argue with the leading authority on white shark behaviour.

Re: Kayak colours - does it matter
Hmmmm... maybe the answer with sharks is to avoid yum-yum yellow but for sea-safety still use a hi-vis colour like orange or bright green, but from Bents experience those bright colours may spook fish.
I need answers dammit... not more questions !

How about a dark hull and hi vis deck? Come on Phil with your connections they'll make it!
