Raw Prawn

i think your idea of the plastic sheet is a very good one in the case where you see the shark before it becomes agressive. The problem still exists though if the shark comes up from below like great whites tend to when stalking and attacking seals. We have all seen those national geo documentaries when the shark goes air born whilst attacking a seal silloette being dragged behind a boat.

as for Bent. i reckon your testies must weight about a tonne each to go and try and ram a great white - MASSIVE KAHUNAS. Definately wouldn't get me doing that. I think i would have sat very still and grabbed my knife in hand waiting for the attack

Re: Fear or a Rush?

Guys, having balls had nothing to do with it, i was sh#t scared and freely admit it. I just acted quickly with what i thought at the time was my best option.

Sitting back and thinking about it makes me wonder how i should of reacted but in the heat of the moment i did what i thought was right. In hindsight that shark would of likely done nothing to me regardless of how i reacted.

What would i do if ever confronted with a similar situation? I really don't know and hope to never find out.

catch ya bent

wow, great story and like just about everyone else, i'd hope never to be out there with a decent white around, especially with a bit a seal scent in the water!

I also reckon you might be onto something rawprawn with the plastic sheet thing. For example a basic plastic tarp or 2 that folds up pretty small and light could easily be carried on a yak.

Hi guys
Well, Bent, you have added another species to your increasing repertoire of wildlife you encounter on your kayak. This one you probably could have done without.
White sharks are very inquisitive animals and have been known to come up and mouth boats, especially propellers. They have been known to attack kayaks and there have been a couple of attacks on kayakers around California. White sharks work on the element of surprise. They are able to attack seals because they suddenly project themselves out of the water and hit the seal with great force, stunning it and taking a huge chunk out of it. The shark would have seen you Bent long before you did. It was probably more interested in the seals than you. All the same...glad you are around to tell the story. Good on ya, mate. If we fish then we must expect such encounters.
Cheers

Im a bit upset you didnt jump in to grab your camera out of the front hatch like you did with the Orca's. A few photo's would have added a bit of substance.

I recon you wouldnt have even got wet, as you'd probably just about walk on water anyway.

i guess articles like that explain why you should never paddle along - especially offshore.

that article was actually quite a scary read.

Better not show mum or the misses that one!!

In addition to the plastic sheet maybe we also need to carry a sheep carcass, which we can throw overboard as a decoy when the need arises emoticon

Re: Fear or a Rush?

I remember hearing that they have signs up in North Queensland near river crossings that read "You are no longer at the top of the food chain" underneath a picure of a Croc.

That is an incredible story. I remember reading an article by some kayak tourers who said that they had been tail-slapped by a white pointer, and that they thought that it was tryin to get them to bugger off from its territory.

Re: Fear or a Rush?

Hi Guys, yeah it makes you wonder what the best option is? Does anyone out there have any experience or know anybody who has experience with those South Aussie made shark shields?
It may be an option while playing with seals.

The other attraction i think it has is that as it only works on sharks that are very close to you, it would still let you berley for and fish for other shark species and i would think that by fishing a back bait well out of range of the device, it wouldn't affect your catch rates.

Catch ya Bent
