Re: Fear or a Rush?

Hi Paul.

As mentioned earlier on this thread, is it posslble to use a larger battery than the one that comes with the unit? Divers and swimmers are unable to carry large batteries, but on a kayak there is usually plenty of dry below deck storge. Having a longer life battery would make the Shark Sheild more appealing to kayakfishing.

Re: Fear or a Rush?

Hi there Paul, i am wanting one of your shields after my little incident and am wondering the same thing as mentioned in the last post.

As i also fish the inshore reefs using my 3.5 metre dinghy i am wondering if i can get one device that i can use both on the yak and the little tinny that can run of a small car or motor cycle battery.

Failing this i still want one but am looking for alternative ways to get longer usage from the device such as full protection over a 8 or so hour period.

Thankyou in advance for your comments.

Regards Scott (Bent)

Thanks for your reply Paul, another from me aswell. How does the shield let you know the battery is dead (lack of sound or something)? What sort of maintenance is advised?

Re: Fear or a Rush?

G'day Meoldchina. The water depth is not a concern, we have clam farmers in the U.S. dragging them behind as they work their beds in water from 2 feet to 4 feet.
The salinity is a problem in that for the two electrodes to pass the current to each other, we require a level of salt to pass the current. It will work in part salt solution. If you find yourself in this situation, simply put the unit in the water and check if the LED lights are pulsing evey half a second rather than standgy mode of every 5 seconds.
Poddy Mullet,With a fully charged battery the GREEN light will show and blink continuously for approx 31/2 hrs then a half RED LED will come on, this means the battery is starting to run low. The unit will run like this for approx. 30 mts. and then all lights will go out. Our unit has two capacitors which ensure that although the battery is running down, every pulse right up to the final second ensures there is no weakening of the protective field
These units are beautifully built. high impact plastic (not one broken in 3 years), all electronics are encased in resin so they can't drown, the battery is not a nicad thus has no memory problems and can be charged at any time. They require very little service but a yearly check to lubricate "o" rings etc. is advised.
The battery should be kept fully charged and then topped up prior to use, any spare batteries should be kept dry prior to change over.
Hi BENT1. Eventually we possibly will have a dummy battery that will seal into the unit and allow a remote 12v system to run the unit. Don't do this yourself. Please understand that we are a small company and just don't have the luxury of satisfying every diversified interest at this stage. We do listen to the market forces and are driven by customer feedback as much as practicality allows. Battery change takes only seconds.
Please understand that this technology does not give a licence to push the limits. Recently we heard of a group of spearo's in W.A. cutting up fish underwater just to see the sharks "hitting the wall" this is a stupid act. You should still take every precaution such as avoiding fishing in seal colonies or slowly remove yourself if a shark is seen.
We have a web-site where many questions can be answered, in particular the FAQ's.
If you love your sport, this technology will enhance your enjoyment.

etc.

Re: Fear or a Rush?

Hi Everyone,

As I mentioned earlier, I have been in contact with Paul about this product. With the help of SeaChange Technology & Australian Ocean Security we are able to offer forum members a special deal on the Freedom 4 unit plus a spare battery.

It's against forum rules for me to post details here but if you go down to the 'Commercial Zone' you'll be able to read more about it.

Re: Fear or a Rush?

Maybe a silly question but is there any research to see if shark shield has an affect any fish species? Particularly with reference to some fish being spooked by it (i.e. harder to catch).

Again probably a stupid question but given that we are only in this for the fishing then maybe relevant.

Re: Fear or a Rush?

Hi Rawprawn. The greatest feature this technology has is that has absolutely no affect on any other marine life. This is why it is being used in aquaculture, (tuna farms), the live fish export industry (coral trout etc.) and on prawn trawlers.
It is only the shark family that have the Ampulae of Lorenzini that allows them to track their prey by means of homing in on the minute electrical output from the prey's nervous system after closing off their sight to protect their eyes.
Fish can go to sleep on a Shark Shield, it will not affect your fishing in any way.
A prawn trawler fisherman in Bundaberg spent his whole life being constantly eaten out at the "cod" end by tiger sharks. This was an occupational hazard that cost him loss of catch and down time repairing nets.
He has now gone over a year without any attack by placing a unit on the cod end. He stated "it paid for itself on the first night, my crew can now sleep during the day rather than repair the nets" Fisheries are now looking at this technology to save costs and prevent the shark bycatch.
This technology is good for people and sharks.

Re: Fear or a Rush?

G day again Paul, a couple more from me (but I'll make em my last!). Based on your research , do you agree with Senior Sergeant McDonalds asessment of the stages of a great white attack in 3.11 (earlier this thread). Do you know of any sharks that may differ from this pattern? And finally I'm also interested to know what negative feedback you've had on the shields. Thanks again.
