Changing the forum ?

Hi Everyone,

When I first decided to start a forum I decided, considering the big unknown question of "would it be successful", to seek a free host and subsequently picked RunBoard as that host.

As with life in general, you cannot have everything for free, so some desirable features such as local photo hosting etc. have to be taked care of externally.

8 months down the track the forum has exceeded the modest expectations I had for it's success so I'm prepared to investigate the possibility of the establishment of a new forum that will, amongst other features:

1).. Have it's own domain name, like www.some_snappy_name.com.au.
2).. Be able to host it's own images rather than rely on services like ImageVenue.

Now, there are some downsides if we go this way, the main 2 being:

1).. Everyone would need to register again on the new forum.
2).. I'm 99% sure I cannot move the posts that are currently on this forum over to the new one. We can keep this forum alive in case people want to read old posts but it will be closed for the posting of new messages.

There will be a setup cost as well as an ongoing cost for me to set the forum up this way that I'm willing to pay for but before I go down that path I'd just like to survey everyone's feelings on the whole idea.

Would you please give this some thought & vote. I'm not looking to change things straight away but I'd like to know by late-August what people think.

Thanks emoticon

Re: Changing the forum ?

The Mariner,

I think you are doing such a great job on the forum that I am prepared to support anything that will make your job easier, proivided it improves the service for memebers. The ability to have our own photo gallery would be a really great improvement.

I am thus prepared to leave it in your capable hands, and will go with whatever you decide, even if it costs me something.

You get nothing for nothing these days so I say go for it.

Paul

Re: Changing the forum ?

Hi Paul,

Thanks mate. I'm determined to keep this forum free of cost for everyone to use so I'm prepared to cover the cost of it's establishment, ie. the yearly domain name registration & hosting account costs. That's the easy bit....

The actual forum software is free & the photo gallery add-on can either be free or have a small cost depending on which one we get.

The real hassle I have is if I have the computer knowledge required to install it all & get it running and this is what I need to research a lot more before I make the jump.

The benefit of using an established forum host like RunBoard is they take care of all this for you.

If anyone of the members feel they might be able to help on the the computer knowledge front please step forward emoticon

I'd be inclined to leave it as it is. It all works wellas it is and the picture posting does not seem to be that hard.

But if you lead to another site, I will follow, and i'd say that the rest will too. Too good to loose

Re: Changing the forum ?

Hey Phill,

I may be able to help you out a little with IT side of things, I haven't setup a forum before but I'm sure it couldn't be too hard. I'll be overseas soon and am due to return early October. Should you go down the path of creating your own forum send me the info and I'll do some research for you.

Which ever path you go down I'll follow even if there is a cost associated with it.

Only to happy to help, when time permits.

Re: Changing the forum ?

Phil,

I'm still new to this forum however I have quickly seen the value of it.

I agree with the comments so far that whatever you decide is in the best interests of the forum then most people will go along with.

I see very little downside in having to reregister and not being able to carry forward the existing posts.

Your generosity with your time and your money in developing AKFF is recogised by all. I for one would support your new initiative and am sure that all members would do the same. Remember that AKFF celebrated 3000 posts in < 8 months, the new forum would have even greater participation and success I have no doubt particularly with the enhanced features.
I might even be able to post some of my meagre catches which I have struggled to do under the current set up (then again I am a bit of a technophobe)!
Go for it! Good luck.

Re: Changing the forum ?

Thanks for the support guys. I tend to follow the 'if it aint broken, don't fix it' rule but I don't want to discount the idea of changing if it'll be better.

I plan on doing lots of testing before deciding to change or not. Just this afternoon I installed a copy of the new forum software onto my website so I can play around with it before comitting the time & money to go the whole way.

Milt,

Thanks for the offer of informed assistance. So far I have been able to muddle my way through but it's only the start & I'm learning with every mouse click. If I get stuck I'll certainly let you know.

Re: Changing the forum ?

No problem here Phil.

Again, whatever is easier for you(in particular) and the members.

Ive just bought a digital camera today and I recon ill struggle to get photos up with my computer skills. I also received the plans for my strip built kayak today and I would like to add photos of my progress to the forum. If changing to another setup makes this process easier, im all for it.

It might be worth putting this thread in the 'Main' forum to get a better response.
