Re: Changing the forum ?

No probs Phil happy to help out. The main advantage to having your own forums / gallery is it allows you the flexibilty to expand which is what you have done over the course of the year. The other advantage is you don't get a whole heap of porn site links via the gallery i.e. you can control what is effectivelly part of your site.

All in good time, best regards Milt,

Exactly. Nothing's free in this world & free image hosting sites have to get revenue form somewhere... advertising. Users of free image hosts have no control over the amount or the content displayed.

Re: Changing the forum ?

Phil,
I'm all for it.
Give the forum a revamp, start a comp for a new banner and I reckon you should set up a "donations" account so we can help out with the setup cost if we want. We all benefit from the forum, I don't think the cost of running it should be a burden to one person.
Just my 2 cents

Re: Changing the forum ?

Hi Again,

Thanks for the support guys. Thanks too for the offer of contributing to it's upkeep but I'm happy to shoulder the cost. In the long run it would probably only be about $130/year and keeping it free for members makes it easier in the long run, especially sine I do attract some business from it.

It sounds corny but your continuing support is payment enough !

On the news front I have sucessfully got a test version of the new board running & it's pretty damn cool. I'm using PHPBB software which is the same as used by YakFishing.com forum if anyone would like to get an idea of what it'll be like. Our forum will look visually different though once I decide on a 'skin' I like.

Re: Changing the forum ?

Hi Phil, mate you are on the right track with the PHP software. I assume you are going the set up a Linux SME server. I play with these a fair bit as it is part of my course and if i was in your situation thats what i would be running ddue to its cost, its security and its easy of administration. If you need a hand with it email me and let me know. I think the idea of a .com site is an excellent one and a necessary one if the site is to realise its full potential. in my opinion, go for it dude!

catch ya bent

For what it's worth Phil, you'll get a mullet's support with any changes, although you'd be wise to avoid any technical advice I offer emoticon

Re: Changing the forum ?

Hi Bent,

You sound like you know more than I do about this stuff !

The PHPBB2 is soooo easy to work with & has heaps of really cool features. I have surprised myself with just how easily I have gotten my test site up & running. The next step is to install the MOD which will allow (I hope) attachment of images etc. to a members' post. The MOD will allow images to be uploaded to the forum's host into a seperate folder structure so there won't be any need for hosting pics externally using services like ImageVenue etc.

After that I may look at offering a gallery service so members can have their own album of pics but I don't know if that'll be worth the effort as most people (I think) just want to easily upload pics into their posts rather than have an on-line photo album that can't have any connection to their posts.

At this stage I'm looking at getting the site hosted rather than have to set-up & administer my own server. I'll register a domain just for the forum then just purchase the hosting, ensuring they offer the SQL database & support PHP etc. which 99% of them do these days. If this doesn't work out in future I'll host it myself on a server at my house but that'll be way more headaches with things like UPS, performing backups etc.

If I can get the pic upload thing working this week (fingers crossed) I'll ask some members to be beta-test subjects & use the test forum for some dummy posts to check it all works. If it passes I'll register a domain, get a host lined-up, deploy the new forum & advise everyone it's open for use.

Re: Changing the forum ?

Phil

From your last post it seems as if you've made the decision to switch to a new forum. I certainly support such a move if it makes life easier for the administration / moderation team and users. Further, I'd be happy to contribute financially to set up and ongoing costs if that is the decision.

Go for it!

Cheers

Re: Changing the forum ?

Hi Bob,

So far my testing is working well but I still have a lot of modifying to add-in the picture upload features I'd like. Until I'm 100% happy the new one will work & be of benefit to everyone I cannot say for sure anything will change.

Here's how it looks at the moment..

All the forum titles will be the same as they are on this forum but the overall look has changed.
