Meoldchina's "Rosco Tidemark Explorer"

For general lake, river, and estuary fishing I prefer the more traditional "Sit-In" style of Kayak:

Hi Ross

Looks like a compact outfit. I can see why you would use it on calm waters. It is certainly quite narrow and probably not as effective on the ocean as a SOT.
Is the white rope at the front part of an anchor rig, or part of the rudder system?
Nice set up. BTW, thanks for the help with the photos.

Re: Meoldchina's "Rosco Tidemark Explorer"

Thanks Simon,

Yes I find the "Tidemark" perfect for most of my needs in Rivers, Bays, and Lakes which is where I do about 95% of my fishing. For the Surf I use the "Debu" and for the odd occasion I want a two-person craft in the calmwater I use the "Cayat". I work on the principle that just one Kayak cannot meet all my requirements and I still have much less capital invested than when I owned a powerboat !

The white rope is just a rope with a Karabiner each end in case I ever need to be towed or tie off on the beach. It's also useful to clip on things such as pliers, knife scabbard, camera, etc.

Regards,

Ross

Re: Meoldchina's "Rosco Tidemark Explorer"

G'day Ben,

I've just read your other posts and see you've got a nice looking Sea Kayak there. My SIK is a fibreglass Touring Kayak and at 4.65 metres long and 0.65 metres in width is wider and shorter than yours therefore yours should be a sleeker craft for paddling long distances and should also go well in choppy water.

I've got three flush mounted rod holders in the deck. The position I prefer is the front mounted one and it is just ahead of the sounder in the picture on this thread. I insert and remove it by holding the rod about a metre above the butt and I have to insert it by "feel" when I have the sounder attached but it works well and I can get to it quickly when I get a strike.

The two rear flush mounted rod holders are positioned just far enough back so that they don't impede my paddle stroke and I have caught fish from both positions but find I get a bit of a "swivel neck" continually checking that the lures are working okay.

I also have two clips on the foredeck so that I can attach a spare rod here if I don't want to use the rear rod holders.

I previously put some photos on another thread so hopefully this will explain where I've positioned my rod holders (and you can see one of the clips on the first photo):

Your Kayak should be great for easily paddling to distant fishing spots and should use up very little energy when you're trolling lakes, bays, etc. I have owned a couple of SOT kayaks and prefer my SIK for most of the fishing I do as long as I don't take it into any small creeks where turning can sometimes become an issue (although this did teach me how to paddle backwards).

Anyway, have a look at the photos and get back to me if you have any questions.

Regards,

Ross
