posticon I'm Hooked ---what to buy

 Hi All

very green to Kayak Fishing - would like recommendations from all - on what - sit on top kayak to purchase.

1. I'm 185cm and 115kg of pure fat - fitness level poor - but working on this and I'm a gemini emoticon
2. fish @ Lake Durras - will mainly target down to towards Nth Durras and up round the bend from the boat ramp - all light tackle.

have been interested in the Cobra - fishndive but have read a lot of bad press on other forums - others would be a Prowler 13 angler, Perception swing etc

any advice is greatly appreciated

Regards
Seddo

Welcome to the forum... and 'the dark side' Seddo Image

I'm not framiliar with Lake Durras but I'll assume it's typical of most impoundments.

The Fish-n-Dive doesn't deserve all the bad press it seems to get... most of which started once Malibu released the X-Factor. Up until then it was the big man's kayak of choice but the X-Factor has taken the big man's kayak up to the next level.

Plusses:

1).. Tons of primary stability.
2).. Plenty of rocker for good performance in rough water (with some limitations) and the surf.
3).. Tons of carrying capacity if it's distributed well.
4).. Cavernous rear tankwell with room for a milk crate.
5).. Plenty of space for hatches.
6).. Flat deck areas for mounting accessories.
7).. Dry ride, both seat & footwells.
8).. Good tracking due to the big keel.

Minuses:

1).. Footwells are narrow & big feet have problems fitting in them.
2).. It's a bear to handle on dry land.
3).. Slowish to paddle & this gets worse if the wind picks up.
4).. The high sides catch the wind.
5).. Any weight up the front, like a small child, completely ruins the tracking.
6).. Has a big flat deck in the ****pit but most of it is taken up by the centre hatch so accessories (rod holders, fish finders) often need to me mounted on the hatch lid.
7).. Almost zero secondary stability & you get no warning if you exceed the primary & are about to flip. However, you need to be doing really stupid things to get it to lean over that far in the first place.
8).. It's a pain to turn tightly due to the big keel.

At your size/weight you are well within the FnD's capacity but you are getting up there for others like the Swing, P13 etc. That's not to say you are too big for them but if a dry ride is important the Swing & P13 won't suit 'coz they'll be wet. They will be faster though...

Others suitable for your size/weight would be the Malibu Pro Explorer, Extreme and X-Factor. The Prowler 15 has less legroom than the P13 so it may be a problem. The Viking Tempo is another good choice (maybe the motor would be a good idea) but again, the footwells may be a bit short & they are on the narrow side. Before discounting any of these kayaks you should sit in one & try for yourself.

If you are not interested in travelling too far, aren't interested in getting there fast, like to stay dry & can solve the transportation issues the FnD will be a good choice. It will also be a good choice for fitness as it does take more effort to paddle one.

Hope this helps and please feel free to ask any other questions.

Re: I'm Hooked ---what to buy

G'day mate,

Glad to find someone else in the general area. I was fishing Durras just last weekend - big shock to see it's open and notice the difference it made to plethera of fish usually available down the back end there. We came home with a few though they were all the same thing - tailor. If you're going to be doing some fishing down there and you're interested in having some company, please let me know. There are a few others on the forum from the Canberra area that might be interested and I know a some more from work, family etc. who are also in for some yak fishing. Are you in Canberra or down the coast somewhere?

As for kayak models to suit, my brother in-law would be a bit taller and about the same weight. He has a Hobie Outback with the pedals which seems to do him very nicely. I'm about your height and somewhere around the 85Kg mark and my Hobie Quest (traditional paddle) has been perfect thus far. The Hobies are definitely a bit more expensive but extra mounting space, good primary stability, great hull access for storage and general comfy layout make it worth while. Most of the other guys on this forum have much more expereience than me so I may be better sticking to the fishing invites for Durras Lake but if you're keen on getting info re: Hobies, you might want to try getting a hold of Outerlimit on this forum. He runs a very good service in Noosa and I'm sure he can fill you in on anything you need to know.

Good luck with what ever you do and like I said, if you're up for a fish at Durras, drop me a line. Also, if you have your yak in time, I'm organising a fishing weekend out of Tomakin (Tomaga River, Barling's Beach etc.).

Have fun!

Not at all. Your opinion is as welcomed as anyone elses so don't be afraid to offer it. emoticon
