A big ask

Hi Guys, looking for some advice on a new yak. I want the best compromise available taking in to account my feature wish list which is as follows;

I want it for trout fishing small and sometimes fast moving streams.

It needs to be short (under 11 or so feet)

It needs to have fair to reasonable white water capabilities.

It needs to be a SOT.

I would like a centre or even better a front hatch to give me a dry storage area.

It needs to accept a pair of flush mount rod holders.

I want something that i can use to paddle upstream against a bit of current. (not heaps of current and not whitewater).

It must come in a khaki or other low vis colour.

It must be very manoeuvrable.

Any input appreciated.

Bent,
How about a Q Kayak Wizz?

Might be a bit slow for you though

Hi Bent,

A Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 would be ideal but it's too late for me to get one in my current order I have coming from them. Could have ordered it in camo colours too...

The Viking Ozzie or Nemo would also be an option but below-deck storage is limited to 6" hatches & low-vis colours aren't std. but would be available to order I expect.

Re: A big ask

Hi Phil, when will you be ordering your next Tarpon order. Any idea on freight to Southern Tassie?

I'll leave it with you but i am prepared to wait as long as neccessary for the right boat.

Re: A big ask

Hi Bent,

It could be a long wait... I haven't received my first order (ordered early July, due sometime September) & I doubt the company in Melbourne I share a container with will be ordering again until early next year. Would you believe I was almost going to get one along with my T160's. Wouldn't have been in a camo colour though.

We'd have to look into the freight costs but I reckon that air-freight to Hobart may be the best option. How did your Prowler get down there from Sydney ?

If you are flexible on the colour I may know where you might be able to get one from in Australia already. PM me if interested.

Re: A big ask

Hi Phil, mate i got the Prowler from my local kayak shop (on the channel) and paddled it home so i didn't need a courier. I think i would rather wait rather than accept a high vis colour. What colour was the one you had in mind?

I can use my old SIK in the mean time i guesss. What about a 120 instead of a 100, would that change expected arrival date? If you ordered early next year will it still arrive for next season or would it be the season after? Should i look at a Viking Nemo?

I sussed out both of them and in my ignorance the tarpon looks sexier than the viking but I am open to suggestions from you. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all of your help again.

Re: A big ask

Hi Bent,

According to their catalogue the only colour stocked is Ice Blue. I don't have any WS boats other than T160's coming & as far as I am aware the company who I share the container with is only bringing in sit-insides so it wouldn't be any advantage to delivery time to go to a T120. This other source I speak of also lists T120's but the only colour stocked is Ice Blue again.

It usually only takes 6-8 weeks for a container to reach Australia from the U.S. but it just depends on when stock sells-out down here as to when a re-order will be placed. To make it economical the container must be as full as it can be & small 20' container can fit about 30 kayaks.

The Nemo isn't a bad boat but it doesn't have a decent depth tankwell or the large front hatch like the T100.

Based on your list of requirements nothing else suitable springs to mind at the moment but I'll keep thinking.

Re: A big ask

Hey Brent,

If you get a chance, try out an Australis Squid. I use one and I am really happy with it. Great cargo capacity, good range of colours and it handles the river runs quite well.

However, it is quite wide for its length, so you certainly loose a bit of speed.

I picked up mine for $770 with a seat, but I am not sure what the shipping would be like. It is 9' in length, so it is good for sneaking in around the snags and up rivers.

Re: A big ask

Heya Bent emoticon

I have 2 WS T-120's and I'm very happy with mine.

Good deck and storage space for a small kayak, and the provision for scotty mounts in the centre console is great. I have two Scotty Powerlock Rod Holders up front in each of the mounting sections, I can troll two rods up front with this setup and I still had room to mount my small Lowrance sounder in the cupholder!.

Also very quiet with virtually no hull slap in calm water if stealth is high on your agenda. The integrated seat back if comfortable and at your weight the ride would be dry (I'm 85kgs and have had to plug the front scuppers which solved this the problem for me).

I've also been able to mount a trolling motor without using a milk crate for trolling. emoticon

I picked mine up from MainPeak in WA for $900ea (well below retail). If your interested speak to Michelle (mhealy@mainpeak.com.au) and see if she can do you a good deal if she has a suitable colour in stock.

Delivery charge to the Gold Coast from WA was only $50 per yak as well.

Hope this info is useful to you emoticon

Re: A big ask

Hi Guys, thanks for all of your suggestions, i have/will have a look at all of them.

Hi Phil, mate i just had a suss at the OK website and liked the look of a OK Caper which they do in a khaki in the angler edition. My questions to you are;

What is your opinion of this boat for what i want to use it for?

I am attracted to it because of its tankwell and its front hatch plus (and i know this is a stupid reason) the fact it looks like a shorter fatter version of "Katana".

How would it compare to the 1 foot shorter but 4.7cm narrower Tarpon 100?

Any input greatly appreciated.
