Re: A big ask
Hi Bent,
Neither Ocean Kayak's N.Z. (www.oceankayak.co.nz) or their Australian Distributor Canoe Sports (www.canoesports.com.au) list the Caper so I don't believe it's available in this part of the world.

Re: A big ask
Just had another idea...
What about a Cobra Play ?
Under 11 feet long & a reported capacity of 115kg. Haven't paddled one so cannot vouch for the performance. Get one with a 10" ****pit hatch, have another 10" hatch fitted behind the seat so you'll have room to add 2 flushmounts.

Re: A big ask
Hi guys, still up in the air on this one, i like the look of the Tarpon, i like the look of the OK Caper and may even consider importing one if i am convinced that is the way to go.
I am concerned with the problems of adding flush mount rod holders to the Cobra as i seem to remember reading of issues with this one cobra kayaks when researching my options for "Katana".
I sussed out that site where i think it was "Rallas" said that he got his 2 Tarpons from and liked the look of a Islander Makai as well.
Another USA made boat that i really like the look of is the Mainstream Kingfish and like the 2 tone blue and white camo colour. Again though there is probably no Aussie importer of these.
Man this is hard, i can look at a deck and see what configuration i want but apart from length to width ratios i can't compare them amonst themselves due to my ignorance of kayak hull design.
i just want my best option, i am prepared to wait as long as it takes and may look at importing myself if a boat stands out from the rest and it isn't avaiable in Australia.
Thanks again everybody for your valued input.

Re: A big ask
Hi Bent,
I have seen a Cobra Play & the area behind the seat is flat (otherwise the A hatch won't fit) & is deep enough so flushmounts don't need to be shortened. The only Cobras that are hard to work with in this regard are the Tourer & the Expedition. I'm 99% sure they are moulded in Sydney so a non-std. camo colour should be a possibility.
Importing just 1 kayak from the U.S. yourself would be hugely expensive & risky unless you know someone over there who ships container loads of stuff to Oz. If not you can send it as part of a 'consolidated' container... this is where people with small shipments band together to get a full container load then ship the lot but you have no control over what else goes into your container.
For example, it could be shipped with a container full of crates of steel ball bearings so the potential for damage is huge & you have to rely on having your kayak packaged to survive the trip. In a crate is best but that's adding more expense, you have to find someone willing to crate it for you & if the crate is wood it will attract customs at this end & it would need to be fumigated... at your cost.
Have I talked you out of it yet ?
My advice... if you cannot find a suitable kayak that's already in Australia then the best bet is to get one brought out to order as part of a container full of other kayaks.
If you do that then kayaks from Wilderness Systems & Heritage (www.heritagekayaks.com) are possible. I did think about the Heritage Dolphin when you first asked but storage is a problem with them. I know someone who has a container of Heritage stuff due any day now & there are some Dolphin's in there but the colours are unknown.
The Perception Freedom is another possibility but it isn't avail. in camo colours & doesn't have the below deck storage.

Re: A big ask
Hi Phil, thanks again for your valuable input and advice. You have likely talked me out of a US import as you raised very valid points that i hadn't thought of.
I think i'll need to sleep on this one. I might see if anyone down here has a Cobra Play i can take for a test paddle.

Re: A big ask
Sorry to hit you in the face with reality mate but I wouldn't want you to undertake something & then wish you hadn't.
Give Cobra Australia a call & they should be able to let you know if dealers down your way. You could maybe ask them about the possibility of doing you a special camo colour to order at the same time.

Re: A big ask
Hi Phil, my local shop that sold me the Prowler stocks Fish-n-Dives so i assume they are a Cobra stockists. I will see if anyone has one in stock i can take for a paddle before worrying about custom colours.
Thanks again

Re: A big ask
Hi Phil, mate i just recieved an email from Canoe Sports telling me that they would be happy to order a OK Caper for me.
What do you think of this model, looking at it's specs and hull design.
Thanks again for answering my million questions but i am one of these people that ask a lot of questions and hopefully learn a lot from them.

Re: A big ask
Hi Bent,
The Caper is more a small kayak for the big man with tons of storage & capacity whereas the T100 is more a small kayak for the average man with good storage & capacity if you understand what I mean.
I haven't seen or paddled either so I'm just going on my gut-feeling & what I read. There's some good reading on Caper V T10O here,
here, and here. Whilst neither are meant to be paddled for miles, the T100 sounds a little more 'sporty' but I reckon you'd be happy with either.
