Big thanx to Mariner - in regards to choosing a kayak

I had a phone conversation to phil regarding the "Which kayak to buy?" question and felt i learnt a lot from the discussion. Phil took me through the benefits and disadvantages from many of the popular brands as well as discussing things to look for when testing - thanx Phil.

Now is it just me or did a lot of you guys out there track to one side when you first started paddling? I seemed to track either one way or the other which was quite annoying after i started to get some rhythm going.

Aw, shux Gatesie... now I'm blushing emoticon Seriously, it was my pleasure ! So.. what kayak did you end up with ?

Paddling straight is all about rhythm & keeping things even. Most people are naturally LH or RH dominant & that can often mean a slightly stronger stroke on one side. Practice your stroke & paddle by keeping your arms kinda straight & turing with your trunk rather that pulling the paddle through with your arms & shoulders, like they show on the DVD as this too will help you keep a nice balanced cadence.

If you find you turn to one side all the time you should just check the keel on your kayak is straight (it's very rare but sometimes the kayak has a warp) and that when stowing your gear you don't have more weight on one side than the other.

Re: Big thanx to Mariner - in regards to choosing a kayak

haven't actually purchased it yet but really looking at the Prowler 13. had a good paddle on sunday and found it easy to move around on - also despite the reviews i found very little water came up through the scupper holes - but maybe 82 kilos isn't enough to essentuate the problem. really think i would like a rudder on it.

Despite not having purchased it yet - have more importantly got the all clear from the girlfriend to buy it. So it will be purchased sooner rather then later now! yeehaaaaa

cheers for your help again Phil

I think a P13 will suit you well & at 82kg I would expect it to be pretty dry too. The P15 is generally a wetter ride than the P13.

Phil/Gatesie,

I too am still reviewing my options. I am thinking that the Perception Swing was a good option for me (especially after paddling Poddy's).

However I am interested to hear what the pros/cons that the Prowler 13 may have in comparision. Being reasonably tall at 6'1" (185cm), 85kg, may have some bearing?

Thanks,
KOBnCo

KobNCo

I am not a massive bloke and my paddlng experience although improving is not great.

i found the P13 a delight to paddle - not too wide to paddle, also i found it quite dry for my weight (but i might add apart from the cruiser waves i went searching for it was a flat day). I am a massive fan of rudders now. i am fine paddling straight up wind and down wind but if i am paddling at about 45 degree to the wind i find it hard to get a rhythm going and staty in a straight line.

people have complained ab out hull slap for the p13 but even with large boat wake i struggled to hear anything - maybe i don't know what i am looking for though.

Re: Big thanx to Mariner - in regards to choosing a kayak

Hi Guys, i find my p15 a really dry ride even in chop, but at 67kg i am way below the weight capacity which certainly contributes to this. It is incredibly stable and i have haven't yet had to rely on the secondary stability although i have pretty good balance from a lot of surf ski surfing when younger.

The guys on here gave me excellent advice which i used to make my purchase. Apart from the weight i couldn't find a negative thing to say about the p15. I have never paddled a p13 so i can't comment on them.

Regardless of what you end up with, with some of the various gurus on here advice under your belt you can't go wrong.

catch ya bent
