Hi, any opinions on the Wavedance Capri kayaks va Cobra tandem for sydney harbour mucking about, fishing and taking 3 and 6 year old children out and about. I'm 6'2 and 87 kg.
Looking forward to seeing you folks out and about on the water.

Re: Wavedance Capri kayaks

Welcome to the forum Castlecrag Image

I haven't paddled a Capri but I have paddled a Cobra Fish-N-Dive which shares the same hull as their Tandem. The hull design does take a bit more effort to paddle that other solo kayaks but it has super primary stability. It also handles rough water really well for it's length due to the amount of rocker & that high bow.

If I have read your post correctly you would like to fish solo but be able to take the occasional small passenger... yes ?

Paddling a kayak meant for 2 on your own can be a real chore as your weight will be biassed to one end of the boat and un-balance it. You have a few of options:

1).. Put up with it but it'll slowly eat at you & make you bitter !

2).. Carry a 20l container you can fill with water & stick in the front. This will try to re-gain some of the balance but it means you'll be paddling the extra dead weight.

3).. Get a tandem that 2 people can paddle but will allow you to move a seat more into the centre for balance. Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 & Cabo both have a central depression in the deck that is meant to allow this or you can simply use a traditional tandem & add the extra position yourself if the deck layout allows it. I think it would be possible on a Cobra Tandem & I know it is on the Malibu Pro 2 tandem but you may be sitting on the big rectangular hatch lid. The deck design of the Capri would not allow this.

4).. Get a 3-person kayak so you can use the front & rear seats when there are 2 people or the centre position when there's only you. Expect a 3-seater to cost more & weigh more 'coz it's a bigger boat. The Feel Free Tri-Yak would probably be the cheapest 3-seater around at around $1100.00. I haven't paddled one so I cannot vouch for their performance and yo'd need to check you have suitable mounting areas for rod holders etc.

5).. Look at Malibu kayaks. They are designed as solo boats but have the ability to take a small passenger using their special 'Gator Hatch' hatch lid, which is a replacement hatch lid that adds a small rear-facing seating position. The Gator Hatch can be used on their Pro Explorer, Extreme & X-Factor models but is more suited to the Extreme & X-Factor due to the extra space available.

The weight on dry land of a larger solo or tandem kayak will always be an issue to move yourself but you can buy or make a cart for under the back to make moving from A to B a lot easier, but lifting it up onto the car will always be a chore on your own.

One final thing...

Would you mind including your location (just a general one, not your full street address) into your profile so we can all see where you are from whenever you make a post. This helps make your posts feel a lot more 'personal' & who knows... you might even find other local kayak fishermen you can meet with. Instructions on how to do all this is in the 'help' area.

Hope this helps emoticon

Hi Castlecrag,

Sounds like you might be located at Castlegrag. Nice part of the world. I'm at Hunters Hill and sometimes put the yak in at Clontarf not far from you.

If you are thinking of a Wavedance yak I can attest to their quality and the price is very keen. I haven't tried a tandem, but I have a single Calypso and I love it.

By the way, the NSW distributor is at Gladesville (quite near you) and you will save quite a bit on retail buying through him. Let me know if you want his details.
