Trolling flies

Hi guys,

To further feed my tackle addiction I bought a couple of saltwater flies today for something different.

I've never trolled a fly from a yak before. Is there any special rigging technique or paddling action you adopt for chasing pelagics like Bonito, Kings and such. I'm not using a fly rod.

Any tips apreciated.

cheers

Dan,
I troll saltwater flies "Polar Minnows and Surf Candys.
They are either trolled on the surface or run off the back of a deep diver via a 800mm flurocarbon leader. Simply remove the treble and attach the leader to the belly of the diver. emoticon

Hey Phil,

From your trials, do you have a better strike rate on lures or flies?

Lures at Longreef and Mona Vale however the flies work well in the harbour for Salmon.I have never caught a King trolling fly but I have got heaps of Salmon and the odd Tailor and Bonito.

When deep trolling flies at Mona Vale and Longreef the fish 80% of the time strike the diver not the following fly.

Re: Trolling flies

A bit of a thread hijack, but I was wondering on a Hb and Sp trolling combo. I've tried the Sp trailing the bibbed minnow with the technique you mentioned Yakman, aswell as trailing from a 3 way swivel above the HB. At the moment (in an effort to avoid tangles) I'm not using any leader and just tying the unweighted hook for the Sp tied about a metre or so above the Hb (sort of a trolling dropshot rig I guess). Any suggestions or comments on this one guys?

Hey Poddy,
Cant say as I have tried the SP HB combo.Did you have any success?

I have found that with soft plastics the shad profile trolls the best as it has a keel and seems to stabilise the lure. Also you can fit nice heavy jig heads to the puppies to get down deep.

Perhaps you could give the shad profile a shot Poddy? emoticon

Thanks Yak Man I'll give it a go. The Hb/Sp combo is still being tinkered with, so any pointers are helpful (especially on the Sp side).
