Lures that troll well from a kayak.
The following are a list of my top 5 trolling lures mainly used for kingfish but work well on all pelagics.
From right to left.
1. This is my No1 lure a Yozuri "Hydro Squirt". It has a rattle and dives to about 2.5m.It has an awesome action behind a kayak.
2. The trusty 150mm squidgy fish with a paddle tail and light weight jig head.
3. White and red platinium stick bait.
4. Ecogear power squid not so much as trolling lure but great for casting into schools and around structure.
5. Surf candy salt water fly works well trolled slow from a kayak.

Re: Lures that troll well from a kayak.
Hi phil, mate i usually prefer to cast and retrieve but when i troll, my top 5 would be;
1. Bridle rigged livebait when chasing larger pelagics.
2. Fresh squid rigged to swim. I use from small bottle squid up to quite large ones depending on the target species.
3. Single tail soft plastic between 2" and 6" depending on target species.
4. Rapala minnow in various sizes.
5. Metal toby style spoon which swims well at slow speeds.

Hi Bent,
I am interested in your rig to set up fresh squid to swim.
If you are happy to share it, that would be great.

Re: Lures that troll well from a kayak.
Mate it is really easy, slice a small slit in the top of the hood on the side that the backbone isn't on. Feed your hook in through the slit and down to the head. Feed the hook down through one of the two longer tentacles far enough down the tentacle so that the hook point is about 1/2 and inch clear of the main bunch of tentacles.
Your trace will now be going through the top of the squids hood, and the gape and point of your hook will be protuding from one of the two longer tentacles and the hook point will not be obscured by the main bunch of tentacles. Using a closed eye rigging needle (buy a largish craft needle from SpotLight the sewing shops as they have a larger range than a tackle shop.
Tie the hood of the squid to the nylon trace so that there is a tiny bit of slack between the tie point and the hook. This will ensure that the squid doesn't bunch up when towed. if you are trolling it from a boat or you want it to troll a bit deeper, you can tie a ball sinker in to the rig with the tag ends left from when you tie the bait to the trace.
When you paddle, every second or third stroke, paddle a bit harder which makes the squid look like it is jetting water to increase speed to get away from a predator.
I have caught everything from snapper to kings doing this inshore from a yak, and marlin, tuna, makos, hammers and big bronzies doing this wide of the shelf from a boat.
You can also do what i do and run it down deep off the downrigger about 2 metres from the bottom. This was how i got all my jews from the Hawkesbury and Cowan when i lived in Sydney, my kings from the harbour and inshore reefs, marlin and other game fish on calm days when the fish were a bit deeper and how i have been getting my gummies down here.
Obviously when you are doing it for game fish you are not 2 metres from the bottom but 2 metres from the bottom seems to be the sweet depth for jews unless they are working eddys in which case they will be higher in the water column.

Re: Lures that troll well from a kayak.
Another very simple way to troll a squid is on a simlpe 2 hook rig.the top hook is snelled to the main line above the bottom hook. There are good diagrams on fishnet.comThe top hook can be ajusted to suit the size of the bait.

Re: Lures that troll well from a kayak.
Hi Scott,
I use the smaller of the two sizes available. The color above and also the brown have proved the best.Good luck with them mate, they work well for me.

Re: Lures that troll well from a kayak.
The little RMG Scorpions are dynamite aswell, with a tight little action and dives about 1-2 meters.
