Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
I just purchased some bung plugs for my Australis Squid off the company. I was assured that they had specific bungs to fit the holes in this (it is a SOT). You can order these direct from the Australis company.
The folks in the store were under the impression that these were mushroom bungs with a cord etc, in other words properly made, which would justify the $15.50 (plus P&H!) price.
They have now arrived, and I am the proud owner of some foam offcuts that have been shaped to roughtly the size of the drain holes. They were too long, and are just the foam - no keeper cord or anything else.
Not happy Jan!

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
Sorry to hear you don't seem to have got value for money there Cormorant. It's certainly not what we in the kayak industry like to hear.
Is it worth going back to Australis & discussing your dis-satisfaction ? Hopefully they'll stand behind their products & work with you until you are satisfied.

i tried some of the aerosol gap filler that you get from the hardware store, it cost about 6.00 for the can and has not leaked so far.

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
I got a bag of six foam practice golf balls from K-Mart for about $2.70. They were a bit big for the scuppers in the Swing so I traced a circle around one end and a slightly smaller circle around the other then used a sharp knife to trim it down.
I've only used them once and they worked just fine. Two scupper plugs for less than $1 and 15 minutes.
For kayaks with larger scupper holes, look at "pool noodles".

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
I took the Mariner's advice, and went back to the Australia company. I am pleased to report that there was apparently a mix-up in the posting, and they are now sending me the proper bungs.
Australis are also working on some new materials for the bungs, and should have these ready for market soon.
I have to say that I am quite happy with how they have responded to this, which is great because I really love the Australis Squid that I have.

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
Just a question from a newbie..... are bungs needed for a SOT like a swing double and yes i understand no more wet tails or feet. Sounds like a great idea to me..... but are the scuppers for a reason ...just asking

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
Hi Shane,
Scuppers are in SOT's for 2 reasons..
1).. To be able to drain water that washes over the sides into the ****pit if needed.
2).. To add structural strength to the kayak by adding columns between the decks.
Scuppers can be plugged to keep water from flooding in & it's a good idea to plug those in the seat of the Swing & Swing Double to try & keep the seat a bit dryer. The open scuppers in the footwells will drain any water that that washes in but they will usually let water flood in under normal use anyway.

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
Shane,
It also depends on the sort of conditions that you are fishing in. For example, on my last trip on the Squid, the tops of my boots were beginning to ice over by the time that I got back to camp, and the water temp was around 3-4 degrees, with ice on the edges.
In those conditions, you want as little water in the ****pit as possible (as well as clothes that stay warm while wet and several complete changes in the cargo hatch!).

Re: Bungs for Australis Squid - not happy!
Hi commerant, mate you have to love paddling in those conditions. I was snowed in yesterday with snow dwn to sea level.
Couldn't go to uni due to all the raods being closed. So i thought, what the f### i am going to go for a paddle.
The sand was covered with a mixture of ice and snow which made carrying "Katana" across the sand interesting.
I had been paddling for around an hour when the wind came up and it started to snow on me. A bit cold but still a novelty for a someone like me who apart from trout fishing the snowies has had little contact with that white powdery stuff.
I will post a couple of picks when the new site gets up and going. I picked up a heap of spyware from that image hosting site so refuse to use their facilities.
