Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
Hi all,
Went out for the third time yesterday (off Portarlington) and hooked up to my first decent fish from a yak, a good sized flattie. I got the fish to the yak, and realised it was only just hooked. I had no landing gear, no gloves etc. When I tried to lift it into the boat the hook pulled - bye bye fish.
What do you guys find best for landing fish? I am intending to by a net (fine mesh so that I can also use it to catch shrimp for bait) but I've also seen those lipgripper things.
Thanks
Glenn

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
Hi Mate, i carry 2 different sized gaffs. The first one i made using a 7/0 stainless steel light guage mustad southern and tuna forged game hook. I filed the barb down slightly and can gaff a fish of under 1kg up to 4 or 5 kg no worries. I have gaffed 10-15kg school sharks with it with no dramas.
I also carry a slightly larger gaff which i made using a 12/0 stainless southern and tuna hook and this one is on a short length of solid glass rod and has a lanyard as well as a short length of 600lb stainless steel wire attached to the eye of the hook. If i get a good fish up, i can attach some heavy cord to the end of the stainless wire, set the gaff by hand and then pay out line from the heavy cord handline. It lets me use it as a small flying gaff.
Hope this helps, i hate landing nets as lures get caught in them. if i want to release a fish i either play it out and comfort lift it into the yak or i use a pair of Berkley lip grippers which work well for the price. Yhe lip grippers rarely get used though as i reach for a gaff if i am going to kill the fish and either comfort lift or remove the hooks out of returnable fish while they are still in the water.

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
Hi Glenn,
I'm a huge lip gripper fan. They make getting the hooks out so easy. Once gripped and landed, I usually give the take home fish a solid whack on the head with a trusty metal pipe and pop 'em into a the bag. If they're going back I just release the grips after getting the hooks out.

Hi Glenn,
I'm with Dan .The lip grips are the go as it enables you to keep the fish at a distance when removing a lure .
This is a bonus when you have a big pelagic onboard.

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
Are the cheaper lip grippers worth the money? Seems to be a huge difference between the Kmart brands and the tackle shop brands.
I am a strong believer in buying the better (and usually more expensive) item, however I dont know anyone who has tried both brands to compare the two.
I imagine the original Lip Grippers have a higher grade of stainless, which would be very important given how wet we tend to get fishing from our kayaks.
Any thoughts?
Gerard.

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
Hi Gerard,
One of the fellas on the site sells the good ones cheap at +/- $160. (cheapest quality ones I've seen)
I've got the dodgy ones (gladiator) and I've noticed the gripping power is really good. The only problem is the screw on the business end isn't stainless or is of a very dodgy stainless quality. It's prone to rust!
It also doesn't have the smooth clean sound of the expensive grips.
I imagine the inner spring is also dodgy stainless.
Because I've already lost a pair off the yak, I'd be leaning to the cheapies at $25 but go with the good ones if you plan to keep them thethered always.
Cheers,
Dan

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
Hi Gerard,
Thanks for wanting to support my business but I don't sell Lip Grips. I reckon it was Simond11 who made the offer to get 'em. He's a flight steward so I reckon he might be able to buy them O.S. & bring them back.
I have a supplier in the U.S. I deal with often & they sell the Berkely 12" Lip Grip for around USD$33.00. That's about AUD$43.00.
If people are interested in ordering I'll be happy to find out what it would cost to get some down here & shipped-out to you.
If another brand would interest you more please let me know & I'll scout around for prices.

Phil.

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
I use the small Berkley grips that were designed for Kayaks and the like. They are small enough to put in your pocket, and they have a built in tape measure aswell. I myself dont believe in gaffs, and i find nets can be a pain in the butt sometimes in a kayak, and take up precious room. The berkey grips are a pretty good price too.
Cheers,
James

Re: Nets, Gaffs, Lipgrippers?
James showed a few of us these small Berkley grippers late last year. I saw them the other day in BigW for $29 -- same price as the regular sized Berkleys.
