TROUT ON SOFT PLASTICS??

I have just finished reading the post on SP's, and I agree that they are probably the most deadly way of catching fish. I have caught many species on SP's and believe that most of the time will outfish other means. After recently moving from QLD (where SP's are the way of life for most)to Cooma NSW (where SP's are almost unheard of) It has been my mission to develop a way of catching these bloody Trout on them. I have had mixed success with some awesome results, but mostly it has been a waste of time with more fishless trips than I would like to admit. The river trout are not the trouble, small wrigglers and grubs bring them undone pretty quickly, but the lake Trout are another story. There seems to be a serious lack of info on the topic, as I have only found 2 articles, both from the same magazine on the topic and I was hoping for someone to share some secrets with me as I have found some pretty fishy looking water up around the Eucumbene dam wall which I would like to take the Yak out for a burn. Any info would be appreciated and used strictly for Catch and Release only.

Cheers,

James

Re: TROUT ON SOFT PLASTICS??

Hi Mate, since my move to Tassie, the local trout and atlantic salmon popluation have recieved a fair bit of my attention. I fish berkley 3" bass minnows in water up to around 10-15 metres deep and just use the retrieve i mentioned in the previous SP post.

In deeper water, the dropshotting method is amazing, and works effectively on the trout schooled just off the bottom as well as midwater trout you have marked on your sounder either hanging in a thermic line or feeding on midwater baitfish. I again use the 3" berkley bass minnows for the dropshotting.

Another method i am playing with at the moment is to deep jig large white (4") single tails on 1/2 oz jigheads in deep water as this is the way the yanks target their large lake trout but they use bucktail jigs and metal spoons. So far the dropshotting is working better than this new method but i obviously have some fine tuning to do with it.

SPs on trout have taken off down here this season and some anglers have been catching and releasing in excess of 30 browns a day jigging 3" bass minnows on 1/16 oz jigheads around structure. No one dropshotts down here yet and i predict that when they do it will blow them away and some cricket score trout captures will be caught and released.

As far as the streams go, have a run with a 2" berkley gulp minnow grub in pumpkinseed, these will blow you away.

hope this helps, and if you want any more details let me know.

Re: TROUT ON SOFT PLASTICS??

G'day James,

After all that excellent advice I reckon I can now look forward to seeing a couple of those reports you promised to submit to Yaker's web-site.

Further to an earlier post you made, if you ever do make that trip back to SEQ then I have a spare Yak you can borrow (my slow one, that is, and not the "Tidemark")). I'll be away from late April to early June, however, so in a couple of weeks time will be out of contact for 5 or 6 weeks.

Good Luck, Ross

Hi Bent,

I've also been trying the GULP range for about 6 months and have taken a few nice Flatties on the 3 inch Minnows, mostly unweighted in shallow water. So far "Rainbow" has worked best and the "Pumpkinseed" and "White" colours have been unsuccessful.

Having read your detailed posts on the subject, however, I will now try the GULPs in my local Bass dam where, during Winter, I often see big fish holding at 20-40 feet and in previous years I wasn't able to entice them to touch anything other than large deep-diving hard-bodied lures.

So, roll on the cold weather, and I'll give them a crack.

What I really like about the GULP product is that it is biodegradeable (and I'm not too keen about using normal soft plastics which I suspect could remain in a fish's gut and possibly harm it if the pieces swallowed were too big to excrete).

Regards, Ross

Re: TROUT ON SOFT PLASTICS??

Thanks Ross, always a pleasure mate. I have a couple of Brogo reports in the making, but am waiting to get some decent pictures to send to you guys. Cant wait until my next trip up that way, am trying to plan one for after winter at the moment, and hopefully will have another Swing by then for the saltwater stuff. Look forward to fishing with you again, take care,

James
