Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

Thought I would try and get some ideas on rod reel combo's for estaury fishing. What is the weapon of choice? I use a okuma 6"6 rod rated at 1-3 kg and a small shimano reel 1500 size. So far for flicking sp's and lures it works a treat ut have not done enough fishing in the yak yet.I originally had a 6" rod ...but managed to turn a 2 piece into a 4 piece and if any one wants the good bottom half let me know and i will send it on its way.I know if i head outside a new rod and rel combo will ne needed emoticon just have to tell the g/f i need it...to get into the big ones around here.
cheers

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

G'day mate, I think that your current weapon is fine for the majority of estaury work. I use 2 rods, A 6'6 NITRO ultralight spin with a SHIMANO STRADIC 1000, and a 7' NITRO with a STRADIC 2500, the first rod loaded with 4lb Squidgy Braid and the second with 6lb Fire line. Occasionally I take a SHIMANO BARRA RAIDER rod with a CHRONARCH reel and 20lb FINS loaded on it if I wanted to chase Jewies, Cod, Mangrove Jacks or Barra, but the first two rods are the choice 99.9% of the time, fishing for Bass, Bream, EPs, Flatties, Trout, Tailor etc etc etc.
Hope this helps

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

Goodaye Shane, mate if you can answer some questions for me i will have a better idea of what to recommend.

What line class do you want to run?
Do you want an overhead reel, a threadline(eggbeater) or an alvey?

What sort of line capacity do you want. If you are only using it for yakking you could get away with 300-400m of your chosen line class.

Are you going to both troll and bottom fish with it or just troll?

Assuming you want an overhead do you want it to be able to be used for casting also (using the same reel on an overhead beach/rock rod)

What is your aproximate budget for the rod/reel/line?

Do you want to run monofilament (standard nylon line) or do you want to run braid. Braid will permit you to put more line on a smaller reel but the reel will have to be of a medium to high quality to handle the extra stress of fishing braid.

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

G'day Shane

I use an Ugly Stik Canoe rod (I think that it is a bit iver 3 feet in length) matched with a small Okuma eggbeater. Works pretty well for me in the tight country, but I use a Pro Angler Flicker rod for anything long range.

It depends where you are fishing. I often have to sneak through jumbled timber and scrub that overhangs the river, so the shorter rod has fewer hang-ups, but it also can't cast anywhere near as far. Gutsy little rod though.

Then again, I also do the same thing with a 9 foot flyrod, I just have to be more careful!

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

I had one of those rods aswell, they are great and near unbreakable!! I used to be able to bend them over and touch tip to butt-pretty amazing!! For Tight country work they are great, I reccomend these rods aswell for light work, and use out of short yaks like my minnow. I would assume though that they may become a hassle from a yak like a Swing, which is very long, when a fish does a run around the front or rear, I think that you would run out of length to control the fish under the ends of the kayak. Does this make sense? Im a hopless explainer

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

g'day Bent1, I am using a threadline( egg beater reel) and using normally 4lb fireline for chasing bass, tailor, bream and flathead in the lake and estauries around wollongong. I have a shimano stradic 1000 with 4lb fireline or 6lb vanish, but prefer the fireline.I am looking at a millerrod for a bass rod on the bank but in the yak the 6"6 okuma so far is ok for chasing the smaller species. At this stage i am only fishing light 4to 6 lb line and small lures to about 10 gram max as that is about the max for the okuma rod. Price for a good combo is not a problem as the g/f is buying it for my birthday........well aim high i say. cheers

Goodaye Sam,What do you want to use the new outfit for? What species, cast weight, line class? Mainly lures or mainly bait?

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

hi again Bent, I will be chasing bream, bass and tailor and flathead and mainly lures up to 10 gram max and a line weight of 4 to 8lb at the heavy end. The new outfit i suppose is what some call ultralight but i am looking more at the sport of it and if i catch a decent one worth keeping to eat that is a bonus.

Cheers

Re: Rod and reel choice for estuary and lake

Mate you will have now worries getting one reel to fish both 2 & 4kg but really need to rods to do this properly unless you go a 3kg rod which will be a bit light for 4kg and the heavier lures and a bit heavy for 2kg and the lighter lures.

Go graphite for lure fishing, a high modulas will give you the best strike detection and the fastest recovery rate. Go a Dawia or Shimano threadline in as high a quality as your budget will let you. You will get a nice rod from $200+ and a decent reel from around 300+.

The dawia Luvias offers the best value currently, they are the entry level reel giving you all of the Certate and Saltiga features and are only $500. I fish a couple of them and they handle everything i have thrown at then including albacore up to 7.2kg on 3kg braid.
