Milt & I read about this news article over on an N.Z. forum. It's a reminder to us all about what can (and could) happen if you kayak ill-prepared or in unsuitable conditions.

Bluewater kayak fishing in off shore winds........Fool.
5 knots or 35 knots, think long and hard before you kayak fish in offshore wind conditions.
My brother Paul (who is very fit) got caught out in a westerly around two years ago.He just managed to paddle back to the shark nets ,take a breather then tackle the final passage back to the beach. He was a total wreck when he finally made it back in.

A fool who made his own luck though - he wasn't alone, he had a PFD on, and he regularly donates to the rescue helicopter.

Still, two hours in the water in cold conditions is pretty dangerous. I don't know if I would get away with only mild hypothermia.

One of the many reasons that I will be taking a long, careful time to build up my skills before heading out past the breakers!

Hi Cormorant,

The only thing that allowed the Rescue helicopter he's been donating to all this time pull him from the water, rather than his cold lifeless corpse, was that someone saw him in trouble. At least his PFD would keep his body on the surface & make it easier to spot.

Instead of buying an extra lotto ticket this idiot would be better off spending his money on safety equipment & suitable survival clothing.

You make a good point. Better gear would have made him safer, but you know what they say, as soon as you idiot-proof something, the universe builds a better idiot.

This guy seems to have been one of the advanced prototype idiots that the universe has been working on, just in case.
