Lighting up
G day All, Rod L and myself were yakkin about yakkin in the dark (both at present using headlamps). Given there's a few blokes on Port Phillip that don't seem to see you in the day, paddling about in darkness gives us the creeps. A bit of a net search yielded this link, but if anyone else has any other suggestions I'd be interested. As an aside I know Vic regulations for yaks/row boats call for at least one all around white light after dark.

Has anyone tried the torch inside the yak trick?

Re: Lighting up
Damn.. I knew you guys were going to talk cool stuff at the pub Saturday night
One cheap method of temporary lighting is to get a length of PVC tube & secure one of those mini mag lights (or one of the cheap chinese copies) in the end. Unscrew the lens cap off the end & hacksaw the lens area off so the globe will be exposed when the cap is on. Get a white ping pong ball & cut a hole in it so you can shove it over the end of the torch. This will act as a white diffuser for the light.
Get a rubber crutch tip of the right size to suit the PVC tube & screw it upside-down to the back of yout kayak somewhere. When you go out at night shove a fresh pair of batteries in the torch, turn it on & shove the PVC tube in the crutch tip.
I haven't tried this but I have read it somewhere. You could also try this similar idea from Lefty Ray's site.

Re: Lighting up
Hi all
That's exactly what I use on my yak. The suction cup light. It's a good all rounder and comes off when you have finished with it.
I also carry one of the Princeton head lamps and a rubberised waterproof torch I bought from Coles.
Can't have enough lights!!
Regards
Simon

Re: Lighting up
Just a thought..
If you suction cup the light to your stern I'll be quite low to the water & from the front will be masked by your body.
Do you guys think this'll create a visibility problem for other boaties ? Would it be better mounted higher, say above head height ?

Re: Lighting up
Good point Phil.
Poddy just text me an said:
"I've just shaved my head for somewhere to stick the nav light"
Do you reckon that will give him enough visability

Re: Lighting up
My lady is suggesting the next purchase I make of kayak fishing gear is stuck in a different anatomical address. If they look a winner, I may end getting one for the stern and one for the bow. Sounds excessive, but for Port Phillip the more lights the better. I maybe turning the Swing into a squid boat by end of summer.

Re: Lighting up
Crikey Rob, you keep sticking lights all over your kayak it'll look like one of those party boats the yuppies take trips around the harbour on.
Come Christmas you could also hang a string of fairy lights in the shape of Santa too...
