Re: Lighting up
Hmm, I do tend to get on a "mission" after a night shift. I may re-assess things tommorrow in a different mindset....although the mention of christmas makes me think of all those decorative lights and long, long, extension leads that get sold at Bunning's come December. What are the options for towing a small generator?

Re: Lighting up
Hey Poddy,
Isn't the neon pizza sign bright enough?

Re: Lighting up
Hi ya yaker, the neon sign isn't cutting the mustard. I may still end going with two nav lights and a headlamp, the one I tried rear mounted may not be enough for a busy bay.

Re: Lighting up
I wouldn't be using port/starboard nav lights.
According to the Queensland "Official Tide Tables and Boating Safety Guide 2005".
"Sailboats less than seven metres and vessels under oars must have a torch or lantern showing a white light ready to display in time to prevent a collision." It goes on to say that power boats and sailboats seven metres or more require side lights and a few other things.
"All boats at anchor must show an all round white light".
My reasoning for not using side lights is that any other boats may reasonably assume that you are travelling under power and able to manoeuvre out of their path, whereas if you just display 360deg white light then you are stationary and (assuming they see you) they are obliged to avoid you.
When I get around to some night fishing I'll be using a C-Light attached to a PVC pipe to raise it above my head. The C-Light concentrates it's beam in a disk and being above my head should give enough down light to see what I'm doing without ruining my night vision.

Re: Lighting up
Hiya yaker, we're going with the all around white light , rather than red/green type for the good reasons you suggested (also satisfies Vic reg's for yaks). I'm keen to have one behind me near the rear hatch, so any boater attacking me from behind can see where I'm at. With a couple of rods set up there, aswell as my girth this light is blocked from boaters coming at me from my 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock, so a second white light mounted on the bow would hopefully overcome this. I do use a headlamp aswell, but it points straight ahead and I'm not confident it covers the side views adequately. Raising one light higher would be the other option I guess, but I'm pretty good at being clumsy so it may drop on my head. Thanks for the reply mate.

Re: Lighting up
Just for a bit of fun last weekend, i stuck a 100w light bulb in the hull of my yack and switched off the lights in the garage.
My yak looked like a big glow in the dark yellow and green banana it was quiet cool and alien looking.
I think maybe an over head light maybe best for both visiblity for boaters and night fishing in general. Or I guess you could make your yak glow in the dark too.

Re: Lighting up
The pic doesn't do it justice as I've also got a Dolphin stuck inside the yak and a wear a headlamp. Still not overjoyed with the suction cups which stick well when wet under the cup (almost to the point of being able to pick up my yak) but once they dry out they will just about fall off. They also seem to need an ultra smooth surface to work on.

Re: Lighting up
Poddy,
I've been thinking about this issue of lights for the yak. Milt's experiment with the 100w globe would create quite a sight but I want to be able to fish further offshore than the length of an extension lead!
Seriously though. One idea I had was to use those new strobe type lights that cyclists use. They are very bright, the flashing is more attention getting than a continuously on light and also they use less power than the continuous lights. They may be be an idea to supplement what people are already using.

Re: Lighting up
The flashing strobe light will more than likely be taken as a distress signal.

Re: Lighting up
Here is my current setup.
It's the same type of light as Poddy's which I have modified. The setup works well but I reckon I'm going to need a brighter light for the night sessions this summer.
I'm now looking for a LED based light but I think it would be best to stick to continuous light rather than a flashing one.
Regards
Grant
