PFD Equipment

I'm interested to know what does everyone carry attached to their PFD's?

Re: PFD Equipment

Knife, whistle & signal mirror (one of those small CD-ROM disks) on my PFD. If I'm going offshore my VHF radio leashed to the deck of the kayak.

Re: PFD Equipment

Sounds about right. I too carry a knife, my VHF radio, an orange whistle and my mobile in a waterproof pouch. I have a PFD that has pockets at the front and they come in handy for storing stuff. Maybe the addition of a heliograph and small handheld compass may not be a bad idea either.
Cheers

Knife/pliers combo, spare spool with fly line and line clippers.
Any more and it gets in the way of my fishing emoticon

And don't forget the Ventolin if you're even mildly asthmatic.

Re: PFD Equipment

My personal EPIRB goes in the front pocket of my PFD.
Over the top of the PFD I wear a fishing vest and in its many pockets I carry a 'flick' style stainless steel diver's knife, a small pair of long nosed pliers, a small pair of side cutters, a couple of reel 'spash' bags, two scupper bung plugs, a tube of sun screen and an old pair of reading glasses.

Re: PFD Equipment

Just a knife in the pocket for me, but I am going to get a whistle. I am mostly sneaking in around the heavy timber after bream & bass, but have been thinking about heading out past the breakers.

Thanks for the advice guys! The CD signal mirror is a great idea, and I also carry a mobile in a dry bag.

Re: PFD Equipment

Continuing the PFD theme, I'm in the market for a PFD for sheltered waters (estuary/lake) use but am rather daunted by the range available. Of the PFDs I've seen and tried on (not that many available here in the ACT), my preference would be for the Ultra Sea Raider PFD1. That said, I'd be grateful for advice on which PFDs people use and the pros & cons of each. Thanks

Re: PFD Equipment

Hi Bob,

Most PFD's for kayak use are PFD2's which don't have the neck support roll like a PFD1, but are still in sea-safety colours.

Paddling PFD's also tend to have larger arm holes for freedom of movement while paddling (something I suppose a pedal-pusher mightn't need) and they tend to be shorter in length for comfort while in the sitting position. From what I see of the Sea Raider I think it may be a problem in both these areas.

The most commonly used ones for kayaking from the Ultra range are the Pinnacle & Gorge. Perception also have paddler's PFDs' in their range, starting with the entry-level 'Freedom'.

Other things to look for are a good array of pockets and a d-ring or loop on the front is handy to clip a knife, whistle and/or a leash between yourself & your kayak to.

Have you tried Jurkiewicz Adventure Store, 47 Newcastle Street Fyshwick ?
