Communication equipment for yakkers?
What do you guys recommend in the way of yak to yak comms? I'm thinking maybe UHF handhelds, or would marine CB handheld be a better option so you can communicate with boaters/coast guard (range probably too limited)
Is there anything that most yakkers 'typically' use? so if I were to paddle with a club what would they most likekely be using?
Thanks,
Gab.

Re: Communication equipment for yakkers?
Depends on the nature of the communication Gab.....if a shark appeared I'd run across the water to Billbob for protection.

Re: Communication equipment for yakkers?
Hi Gab,
I recommend a marine VHF handheld. Get a JIS-7 rated one & it's submersable, or get a lesser-rated one & keep it clean & dry in an AquaPac. I have a JIS-7 rated one but didn't like it getting all crusty with salt & bait so I bought an AquaPac for it anyway.
I don't recommend mobile phones. They only work if you have range & if the person you are calling actually answers your call. With a radio you stand much more chance of being heard by more than 1 person.
A mobile, in an AquaPac of course is better than nothing at all but we're talking safety here so don't take the cheap option. As an alternatine I know Billy uses an EPIRB beacon.
I sometimes fish offshore alone & I always log my departure & expected return time with my local sea rescue radio station.

Phil.
