Portable radio

Hi all
Do you need to do a radio course before buying a portable radio? I want to buy one as I will be doing a lot of offshore fishing and I seem to have read somewhere you need to do a course through one of the local Volounteer Coast Guard clubs. I guess it certainly wouldn't hurt.
Thanks

Simon

Re: Portable radio

Hi Simon,

As far as I know you are supposed to do a radio operator's course. If you have the time it certainly would be interesting but there's certainly enough info on-line about the place that gives you the basic procedures you need to follow in case you don't do a course.

Re: Portable radio

G'day Simon,
I just purchased a portable marine radio myself. Silly me didn't check out the rules first. The ruling is that if you have a VHF radio you are supposed to do the Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency or the Marin Operators VHF Certificate of Proficiency. Site for more info is www.amcom.amc.edu.au. You can do courses or a self study handbook (downloadable from the site or you can order a copy for about $30). Then you locate an 'Invigilator' (someone who can conduct the test) and go do the test. The cost for the test is currently $38.50 but it's going up in a month or so. Apparently it's a multiple choice senario, you have 30 minutes and I think it was 30 questions. I was told it's possible to fail but it almost never happens.... Hope this helps.
Regards,
Justin
PS. I think these are national rules rather than State based.

Re: Portable radio

To be honest fellas, if the radio is for occasional use, ie logging your departure & return with the local sea rescue people and for making distress calls I don't know I'd bother with coarses & testing.

I know it's the law & it's the right thing to do but...

Re: Portable radio

Hi Justin
Thanks for that. Just enrolled at the Marine College and ordered their book via the phone (cheaper). Prefer to do distance learning as my job requires me to be away a lot.
Will let you know how I get along.
Thanks again

Simon

Re: Portable radio

Hi all
just purchased an Icom M32 portable VHF marine radio here in Singapore. Afraid to say but a hell of a lot cheaper than OZ. Paid about AUD$230 brand new. Feels really rugged and totally waterproof. Now to do the VHF radio course....

G'day Simon,

You got a good deal.

Have a look at an article from last year on Yaker's site at http://members.optusnet.com.au/aus-kayak-fishing/articles/vhf.html

Re: Portable radio

Good thread Simon, with your job do you get the chance to fish in foreign waters?

Mariner you're a rebel, how could you not respect someone who calls themselves an "invigilator" (no offence to the world's invigilator's who are no doubt invigilating to the best of their abilities, but to an uninformed Mullet an invigilator sounds like the small part of an an aquarium pump that makes tiny bubbles - the bit that is a pain to find a replacement "o" ring for and sits next to the even rarer left hand thrusher). Life gets more confusing for me emoticon emoticon

Re: Portable radio

Good one Poddy,

I myself wondered why there was a need for an "invigilator" rather than a "supervisor" however it appears that an "ivigilator's" role is to supervise the examination as well as to stop cheating (which is the important bit if the world's "pleasure & fishing boaties" are anything like my mates).

Hi Phil,

I believe it really is worth doing the course particularly if you join and do it through the Coast Guard/Volunteer Marine Rescue groups as they need all the funding they can get to keep up their excellent services to the water going community. Even though my training was spread over two days and was fairly basic at times, we got to have a look over the Coastguard Base/Communication Centre and it was good to meet a group of boaties in my class of 12 from all sorts of sailing and fishing backgrounds.

As successful applicants are issued with a unique "call sign" they'd soon know if you called up as an "illegal operator" however, I'm sure they'd still rescue you for a small fee.

Regards,

Ross
