Re: Portable radio
Hi Poddy & Ross,
Rebel... dunno about that. I have no problem supporting the volunteer marine rescue guys who run the course as they do rely on fees from these sorts of things to help fund their terriffic service. Likewise I agree the stuff you'd learn & see would be heaps interesting & it's a great chance to talk with other guys from different fishing/boating areas.
In short, yes, I and anyone else operating a radio should do the right thing & be acredited and I'm not trying to steer people away from doing what's right. My comments born out of the fact (pathetic an excuse as it is) that working full time & running my kayak business part time leaves me not enough time to get out & fish, let alone attend the course I know I should.
Others may not have the time to attend such a course also and I wouldn't want that to stop them getting a radio to use in an emergency. Better to use a radio illegally in an emergency than not carry one at all.
Having said all that, now I have been shamed I'll probably go do a course in the off-season during winter...

Phil.

Re: Portable radio
That's right Phil, no-one's going to throw you in jail for using your VHF radio (without having done a course) to help save someone and I certainly carried my VHF radio on board for several months before I was able to organise a free weekend.

Ross

Re: Portable radio
Hi all
I haven't yet had a chance to fish in foreign waters. Although Singapore has a lot of water surrounding it, most of the fishermen use charter vessels to fish around Malaysia and Indonesia. One of the local fishing tackle guys was telling me there have been a number of instances where the Indonesian Police have boarded charter fishing vessels and have confiscated all the fishing tackle under flimsy excuses of fishing within certain areas. Sometimes "payment" can prevent the tackle being confiscated, but many Singaporeans are still nervy about fishing around there.
Kayak fishing is totally unknown of and the disbelief of the locals when I tell them I fish from a kayak in Sydney is followed by the usual: "But wha about de shaks??!!!"
Cheers
Simon
