Compass
Hi everyone
Does anyone have any thoughts about a compass for the kayak? I have been looking at a number of models including the Ritchie that has a light in it and the Suunto Orca which is very yellow and can be detached.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Simon

Re: Compass
I just have a small plastic orienteering compass (cost about $14) glued flat on the floor between my legs and it works fine. I also attached a cheap ($9) waterproof watch "sans straps" so I can just look down and I know where I am headed and how long I've been paddling.
Simple but they work for me.

Re: Compass
I like the simple approach !
The best spot for a compass is about mid-way between yourself & the bow... as long as you are still being able to read it. Any deviation from your course is more obvious that way & it's easier to ensure you are going the right way 'coz you just need to line-up the bearing you want to be on and your bow by sight. That's where the Orca gets used the most.
Guys in the U.S. like to use the Ritchie bulkhead mount compass & mount it in front of them in a near-vertical wall, like a footwell.
.
As GPS's become more common the need for a compass will diminish but they are always a good thing to have in case your GPS batteries go flat

Re: Compass
Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Funny you should mention the GPS....there is a Garmin GPS72 on eBay that I have been looking at. I have discovered this program called Fishing Buddy and I downloaded it from the internet (shareware for 30 days, then it's AUD$40). You put in the coordinates and based on solunar phases it tells you the best times for fishing in that area. Sceptical as I am, I went out this morning and fished at the time it told me (around 12 midday) around Clovelly and Wedding Cake and BANG....snapper everywhere and something quite large that spat the hook. Hmmm.....Like a Swiss watch, they stopped feeding after about 1 hour...as predicted by the program. Coincidence or what...???

Re: Compass
Hi Simon,
If you get a GPS make sure it's water proof not just water resistant. Some say they are waterproof but aren't. If in doubt use an AquaPac or similar.
