Plugging Holes
I had a minor hiccup when putting my yak away today. I broke off one of my paddle clips which pulled the SS screws straight out.
I didn’t actually like them anyway because you sometimes hit your finger on them so I’m looking to take the other one out and install a bungee cord holder. Here's where I need help:
I will have 4 small holes in the side of my yak that need filling. They are above the waterline but I couldn’t leave them open. What’s the best way to cover/fill/mend small SS screw holes?
Any thoughts and experiences welcome.
--- Regards
Rod

Re: Plugging Holes
Recently when I sold my Scupper, I had to plug numerous holes for fittings that I transfered to the Swing. I used a soldering iron. It worked very well and because of the textured finish of the scupper, it was hardly recognisable. Just dont push too hard, use a circular motion.

Re: Plugging Holes
Buy a small pack of roofing iron screws with the neoprene washers on them and re-fit each of the paddle clip bolts with a neoprene washer between the bolt head and the deck of the yak.
You dont have to tighten the bolts too firmly. Just enough to 'spread' the neoprene washer slightly.
Depending on the size of the bolt head you may also need to use a stainless steel washer.

Re: Plugging Holes
Hi Rod,
sorry to hear about your paddle clip. I know that Phil has some split-tail rivets on his site which should do the trick.
If you are considering Shoei's suggestion with the soldering iron then you might want to think about also using some P-Tex. I don't know how well is will stick to polyethylene but it has worked well when I have repaired my skis over the years.

Grant

Re: Plugging Holes
Hi Rod,
If you want to re-fit the clips then Bill's idea is a good one or you can use wellnuts as these would need a bigger thole than the stripped screw hole.
If you just want to plug the holes rivets can be used as Grant suggested. These need a Ø5mm hole. I have used them sucessfully to plug holes such as yours as the head sits quite flush against the side of the hull. Paint the heads to match your hull & you won't notice them.
Welding the holes over can also be done but it's a bit trickier to do. Having some plastic to use as a filler works best as you need to find plastic to fill the hole form somewhere. If you don't have any filler you need to get the plastic from the area surrounding the hole which thins that area out.
To ensure maximum compatability you should use the same material you hull is made from & not all manufacturers use the same. The best source would be from left-over cutouts from when you added rod holders, hatches etc. You should always keep these in case they are needed for just such a job.
If you don't have any then, provided your Explorer is an aussie manufactured one (I reckon it would be), contact Cobra Australia & ask then to send you a piece in the correct colour. Failing that, maybe it's time to add that extra rod holder or hatch you have been thinking about
I have a copy of a hull repair welding guide in PDF format I'm happy to send you if you want to attempt to weld them. It describes a couple of methods & would be worth a read before you tackle the job. Just PM me your e-mail address if you would like it.

Re: Plugging Holes
Thank you all for your ideas/advice.
I'm thinking of plugging rather than re-attaching so I think I'll use the weld method in the hull repair guide The Mariner sent me.
Thanks Phil
