Re: Which Marine Adhesive?

Hi Dallas,

There are many ways to do a transducer installation. Some use a 'permanent' installation and stick it down directly to the inside of the hull with epoxy, Lexel or silicon. Others use a 'semi-permanent' installation using a PVC ring glued down & place the transducer inside with water, glycerine or vaseline then cap the top & others simply hold the transducer against the hull with tape or in a foam pocket with a layer of vaseline underneath.

All are valid methods & the choice is up to you. The key thing, regardless of the method, is to avoid trapped air bubbles underneath the trans. This is more important if you use the epoxy/lexel/silicon method as you only have 1 go to get it right, otherwise it's break the trans. off the hull, clean it up & try again.

My personal preference is to use Araldite epoxy. Why ? It's less complicated than making mounts up to hold the trans. if you use the semi-permanent methods & I can't buy lexel down here in Adelaide. I also hear Lexel is a mongrel to get off if you need to whereas epoxy is a bit easier but without having tried it myself I can't say for sure.

The trans. should be mounted in an area of the hull less prone to flexing, such as down the centreline of the kayak between 2 scupper posts, so under your seat should be O.K.
