Location of one fishing rod holder - sea kayak
I have an Elliott Kayaks model Yacaaba 5.2m by 63cm sea kayak. Am going to put 1 rod holder in - port side aft behind the ****pit. How far aft of the back of the ****pit, and how far off centre, should it be so that it does not interfere with paddling, but is reasonably accessible? I only want to cut one hole in the deck! (ie get it right first time). Rod holder will be a $7 el cheapo plastic type from Whitworths boat stores. Many thanks. Rob

Re: Location of one fishing rod holder - sea kayak
Hi Rob
Hard to give you exact position, but one way to figure it out is to strap the rod with gaffer tape to the area where the rod holder would be, sit in the kayak and using the paddle, pretend you are paddling. This should give you a good base to see whether your paddle will hit the rod. Always leave yourself a bit more space, as your paddling strokes will never be always precise i.e paddling harder, fatigue etc.
Hope this helps
Simon

Re: Location of one fishing rod holder - sea kayak
Hi Rob,
Welcome to the forum
Simon hit the nail right on the head. Turn the rodholder upside down & tape the flange onto your deck so the tube portion sticks up. This will simulate the position of the rod in the holder so you can check your elbows don't hit it on the back stroke when you sit in the kayak & simulate your paddle stroke.
Allow a bit more room for safety to allow for your reel being bulkier than the rod & the reel handle sticking out. Also check you can reach the rod to put it in/take it out when you turn around.
If you can get access behind the deck with a spanner use countersunk screws, nut & washers. If you cannot, use countersunk screws & wellnuts but if you use wellnuts make sure the screw positions on the mounting flange are spaced far enough away from the tube portion for the wellnut to fit.

Re: Location of one fishing rod holder - sea kayak
Hi Rob,
The other option is to fit an adjustable rod holder, cost mid $20 - mid $30s.
You will only need to drill 4 holes for bolts / screws and not cut a large hole for a flushmount holder.
If you are slightly off with your angles and the rod hits it you can turn a little bit farther out of the way.
Could be a loser risk option if you are nervous about cutting the hole.
