Sea Anchor
Has anyone used a sea anchor on the kayak to reduce drift speed?
Because I fish mainly SP’s, I find I drift too fast when the tide & wind are in the same direction.
I’ve had a look on the net and only found them for larger boats (about 6.m mitres wide).
Any thoughts on the effect on kayak stability with a sea anchor out?

Re: Sea Anchor
Rod, I've used a small sea anchor from my kayak on the swan with mixed sucess.
I found that when wind and tide oppose it works ok. When wind and tide run together its time to break out the anchor or chain
Hope this helps

Re: Sea Anchor
Hi Rod,
These are the two that I use for a controlled drift in both light and moderate conditions.I find that used with a float they are more than adequate.

Re: Sea Anchor
Welcome to the Forum bradb Good to sea another member from out west.
You are 100% right... the wind must be opposing the current otherwise they don't slow your drift at all.
My drift anchor is a Lalizas brand one for small boats up to 15', 50cm x 55cm. To be honest, I can't get it to work that well for me. Guys in the U.S. are getting good results with 'drift chutes' that have a float on the top edge of the opening & a weight on the opposite edge to help it open quickly & keep it open.
Crack Of Dawn, Malibu Kayaks accessories division has one in it's catalogue but these won't be available in Oz for another 6-7 weeks.
What are you using Phil ?

Phil.

Re: Sea Anchor
Hi guys,
Both of those sea anchors can be purchased from Whitworths marine supply and they are not expensive. The smaller one is a Bourke and is sold as a drouge for a danbouy. The large one is a Lalizas.
You must use a float with both of these as seen in the photo.
Rod, if you dont have a Whitworths in Vic and have trouble with the purchase ring me (0403 050 912) and I will source and forward one to you.

Re: Sea Anchor
I finally got around to buying the sea anchor (50cm Lalizas).
Where is the best place on the kayak to clip them on?
If I'm drift fishing, I would expect the centre --> mid rear of the kayak would provide the best drift?
Anyone got any thoughts?

Re: Sea Anchor
Rod,
I attach mine to the bow or the stern that way your kayak will not be beam into the weather.
If the seas are big we use bicycle tubes as springers to reduce the shock transfer to the kayak.
