Anyone used a wireless fishfinder???
Hi there,
Just wondering if any of you have tried the Humminbird RF20 or RF30 fish finders.
One clips onto your rod, the other is a wrist watch model. The transducers are designed to be cast out into the water and are totally wireless.
I reckon these would be great on the yak because you could permanently set the transducer in the hull or just bob it out the side on a cutdown rod. No wires - no drilling!
What do you reckon???
Cheers,
Dan

Re: Anyone used a wireless fishfinder???
Hey Dan
I considered one of these.
Eventually went off the idea after reading some reviews @ http://www.fishfinder-store.com/
It didn't do very well on the Rating Meter, the RF35 performed better but isn't available in Australia. From what I can tell the transducer isn't bad, but if the screen is so small you cant make out anything, it kind of kills the entire thing, your only as strong as your weakest link or so they say?.
The other thing that put me off is that the wireless transducer battery expires after a certain period of time and the entire unit needs to be replaced, I figured the cost of ownership over a few years would hurt a little.
I think the technology has amazing promise, but its still in its early stages and maybe needs a bit more refinement.
Once refined I think your right though, almost make for kayak fishing!

Re: Anyone used a wireless fishfinder???
Good detailed reply Rallas !
Dan, these are meant for use by land-based fisherman and have many compromises compared to traditional fish finders. They are also more expensive with less features.
It's not a big deal to mount a fishfinder to your kayak so you shouldn't be afraid of tackling the job. Once it's finished & working you'll be pleased you did it.
I have a Humminbird PiranhaMAX 15 on my Swing (& also have on one my old Fish-N-Dive) that works faultlessly.
If you are looking to buy a fishfinder please PM me as I might be able to help you.

Re: Anyone used a wireless fishfinder???
Thanks fella's,
Yeah, I reckon I'll leave the wireless ones alone. I already have a Garmin FF120 which was not stolen when my tinny was. I'll just get a replacement transducer and fit that on the yak.
thanks again,
Dan
