Update on Marine Adhesive
I have used Selleys All Clear to fix my transducer inside the hull on the weekend.
I have used allclear in other areas on the yak with good success, but it takes a long time to cure,it looks the same type of adhesive as Lexel.but by the sound of it Lexel cure a lot faster.
Bunnings put me on to Josh from Parchem who makes Lexel, but they only sell by the box so if anybody is having trouble getting it,Tony from Tango Contruction and Timber Supply from Ormiston Brisbane was going to get a box in to sell per tube. This all happened 4 months ago so I don't know if he still has some in stock, contact him on email tang1@bigpond.net.au or ph 0412194646

Re: Update on Marine Adhesive
Help required!!!!!!!
I wish to fix a fishfinder transducer inside the hull of my newly acquired Hobie Outback.
From what I've read on this forum Lexel appears to be the product of choice for this purpose, however, here in the ACT it seems to be as rare as the proverbial rocking horse s**t! Only one of the numerous retail and wholesale outlets I have contacted was able to supply Lexel, but as they didn't normally stock it, it would be on the basis of them ordering in a carton on the proviso that I purchased the whole carton - tempting but no thanks!
Is the adhesive problem one of the potential for some adhesives/sealants to cause an adverse chemical reaction with the polyetheylene kayak hull material resulting in permanent damage to the hull? Or is it that polyethylene is inherently "non-stick" due to its wax-like surface and therefore requires roughing up to increase its adhesive qualities coupled with the fact that some adhesives/sealants simply have better adhesive qualities with regard to polyethylene?
I have been told that Selley's Kwik Grip (heat & water resistant) would do the transducer job. Has anyone had any experience with this product for kayak use?
Any advice/guidance would be gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance
--- Bob

Re: Update on Marine Adhesive
Hi Bob,
I use 24hr Araldite to epoxy all my transducers down. Yes, the PE material is waxy which makes for real problems with adhesion but if you rought it up & clean it well with metho beforehand you get a good enough bond.
If using Araldite or any other adhesive (lexel or silicon) you need to let it fully cure before use as the energy developed by the trans. can cause air bubbles in any un-cured adhesive which will give you dodgy signals.
The key to any glue-in installation is to:
1).. Minimise the amount of adhesive between the hull & the trans.
2).. Ensure no air bubbles are trapped when you glue the trans down.
3).. Weigh the trans down while the glue sets to stop the trans lifting & forming air bubbles.
4).. Allow plenty of time to cure. I leave my epoxied tranducers completely undisturbed for 5-6 days before use.
Dunno about using kwik grip... haven't tried it & don't know anyone who has. I'd stick (pardon the pun) to established methods that we know work.

Re: Update on Marine Adhesive
Hi Bob
Phil is spot on with his advice for fitting the transducer to your yak.
I used Selleys All Clear and it has worked fine, but it takes 7-10 days to set.

Re: Update on Marine Adhesive
Phil/Stu
Thanks for the advice. I'll give either the Araldite or All Clear a go depending on which I can get at the hardware store. Is there any particular sub-type within those 2 brand types which is recommended?
Phil - when you say "Minimise the amount of adhesive between the hull & the trans", am I correct in assuming you mean something like a 1mm layer rather than a 4 or 5mm layer?
Thanks again

Re: Update on Marine Adhesive
I always use the genuine 24 hour Selleys Araldite, not the quick setting 5 minute stuff. If you get the pack that has the 2 parts in a syringe it'll make getting the proportions correct really easy. 1 syringe pack should do 2 tranduscer installs.

Re: Update on Marine Adhesive
I would not recommend useing Selleys All Clear to attach the transducer to the bottom of a kayak.
It worked fine for three weeks but noticed a poor signal on my last outing.
I transport my kayak upside down on the roof racks and I think the sun has softened the All Clear and the transducer has moved a small amount
I am sure the 24hr Araldite or the Lexel will do a better job.
