Kayak Decals
Can anyone tell me how to make decals stick to a kayak? I realise that it is almost impossible to do because of the material that they are made of, but was hoping that there is a trick out there that i can use.
cheers,
James

Re: Kayak Decals
They're not that hard a surface to stick to actually.
A really good clean with methylated spirits will help.
I stuck a fairly large Davo's Bait and Tackle stick-on transfer on the side of my Swing two years ago when we were doing a photo shoot (thinking as long as it stays on for three or four hours that's cool) and it's still sitting snug on the side of the yak nearly two years later!

Re: Kayak Decals
Hi James,
I found that decals/vinyl letters etc. will stick to a kayak as long as the surface is smooth. I have some lettering stuck to smooth postions of the bow deck on my Swing but the lettering just fell off the Viking Espri I tried to stick them on.
As Billy said, a good clean with Metho is reqd.

Re: Kayak Decals
James, give Redro from this site a yell. Im not sure exactly, but his business has something to do with decals for kayaks I think.
I know he is OS at the moment, but send him a PM or create a post on the main forum and I am sure he will answer.(I believe he cant sleep at night at the moment due to bad dreams about giant Sunshine Coast Mackeral!).

Gerard.

Re: Kayak Decals
OK, I am going to give our graphics an unashamed plug! Seeing as I have been asked the question. I can do this with a clear conscience as it is a fairly specialised area. Nothing, but nothing, sticks to PE. The idea of combining graphics and polyethylene substrates has been viewed as an attempt to mix oil and water. Non polar, inert olefin based resins have poor adhesive sharacteristics. Yes, a vinyl label will stick to PE for a while - but just let me have a crack at it with my finger nail - and it will not stick for long! Take a look at the graphic on your kayak - 95% of kayaks worldwide are decorated with Mold In Graphics made in Arizona by Mold In Graphic Systems. The graphic transfers are litteraly printed out of compounded PE - as opposed to inks (ink transfer process) or vinyl labels (ink on a substrate). Because Mold In Graphics are made of compatable PE (they are litteraly a slice of PE) they are completely integrated into the polymer matrix during the roto moulding process. They are moulded INTO the polyethylene. You will not be able to get your finger nail under them - because they are part of the poly (take a look). They will be there for the life of the kayak - solvents, salt water, UV, chemicals, abrasion, finger nails notwithstanding. If you want to decorate your part post moulding - then Mold ON Graphics can be used. However, minimum run sizes might be an issue here - it is not viable to print say 20 graphics. Mold On Graphics are flamed onto the part after it has been moulded - the PE graphic is litteraly welded to the PE part. Useful for large injection moulded parts (pallets) - where an in-mould Mold In Graphic can't be used. www.moldingraphics.com

Re: Kayak Decals
Apparently 3M make an adhesive primer that may be worth looking into. It's mentioned in the discussion here on KFS
