can it be done???

I have been thinking about getting a Scrambler by Ocean Kayak, but the bow hatch is way to small... Would it be possible to install a large hatch like the one on a Scupper Pro?

Thanks,

nextwave.

Re: can it be done???

Hi Nextwave,

As a Scrambler owner, I'd be a bit dubious about getting a Scrambler for fishing. They're great recreational vessels but as a fishing machine, they have too many limitations. The hatches are useless. Also, Scramblers make fitting additional stuff difficult because they don't have flat surfaces for mounting.

If you're serious about yak fishing it's better to look for something that has the hatch you need rather than modify for the hatch you want.

On the plus side, Scramblers are very stable and quite manouverable. Also it's really easy to fit a crate on the back. Good luck in your choice.

Cheers
Dan

Hi Nextwave,

I seriously doubt it. The hatch rim on the Scupper is moulded as part of the hull so the Scrambler won't have this. You'll need to look for a hatch that has a seperate rim that can be fitted to the deck of the Scrambler. Perception have a 10" round hatch lid that is available with a seperate rim. You'll need a flat area Ø 275mm to fit it but it probably isn't much bigger than the Scrambler's hatch now.

Crack Of Dawn have nice large bolt-in rectangular hatches that might fit. If someone with access to a Scrambler would be able to measure the FLAT area that's available to fit a hatch & post the sizes I'll see if a CoD hatch would fit.

Hey Phil,

Do you have any pics of the COD hatch?

Take a look at the Hatches Section of the CoD Website.

They do 3 hatches... a small 4-point rectangular hatch (that's the one shown on their website) 31.8cm x 39.7cm overall frame size, a large 6-point rectangular hatch 32.0cm x 57.8cm overall frame size & a 2-point round hatch that has about a 30cm frame.

Re: can it be done???

Hi Nextwave
I too have a Scrambler and the area for the bow hatch is .420x.240 mm oval shape
The round .200mm hatch in the middle between your legs is not worth useing, I have had problems when the kayak is loaded with fish and the the hatch is under water.
I got caught out when I tryed to put a fishing reel in and a load of water whent in with it .
It wasnt a pretty site when the water ran to the front as I was going down a wave.

How I got a round the problem of fitting rod holders and fish finder was easy I didn't want to drill holes in the yak so by fitting ply wood 120x20x600 mm across the kayak infront of your foot line it gave me room to fit a Lowrance x51 and a small battery mounted to under side of the ply.
The two drop in type rod holders are fitted in holds drilled each side of the x 51 The ply is held with two tie down straps.
The transducer is mounted on a metal bracket off the end of the ply which extends down below the water line
It only takes a min to fit when you have the yak in the water.
For ocean fishing I use ply the same size with two horizontal rod holders mounted at right angle to the kayak.I use two Alvey 655 snapper reels on 10 to 15kg boat rods, and 20 to 30lb line. The reels can handel the salt water
This set up might not suit every one but it makes the Scrambler easy to transport and I can use it for all types of fishing.
