Transducer types
Just got a new Prowler13 and will be fitting a fish finder - any views on whether or not to go for a "shoot thru hull" type or the standard skimmer type?

Re: Transducer types
Hi Bluefin,
Welcome to the forum
The std. skimmer type transducer will work fine. The most important thing to do is to make sure when you mount the trans. there aren't any air bubbles trapped between it & the hull. You can epoxy it down, use silicone, 'Lexel' or mount it in a foam block & use a thick layer of vaseline between it your hull.
Hope this helps !
P.S. Would you mind including your location in your profile so we know where you are. Instructions on how to do this are in the 'Help' forum.

Re: Transducer types
Hi Bluefin
My transducer is mounted inside my kayak, although this prevents me from getting a water temperature reading. I have now started just putting the transducer over the side of the kayak while drifting and putting it inside the yak while trolling. i am trying to come up with a system that can do both.
Stay tuned

Re: Transducer types
Hey Bluefin,
I have a Humminbird PianhaMAX 10 fitted to my Hobie Outback. This is the third kayak I have put it on (due to continually updating demo kayaks) and securing the transducer to 'shoot thru the hull' using a good quality silicone is the way to go. I also get a temp reading because the hull warms or cools to the temp of the water. I still use 2 lantern batteries. Haven't decided whether to upgrade to a small rechargable yet.

Re: Transducer types
Guys
Thanks for advice. Phil - location should be now visible.
I have a Lowrance X67c fish finder which I use on my power boat. What I want to do is simply be able to transfer the finder to my SOT from time to time, but have it all wired up in the SOT so it is just plug and play. A skimmer type transducer fitted internally should do the job - quoted price from nearby dealer - $219.00 for part only. Does this sound reasonable? Anyone know of any other options?

Re: Transducer types
No simple solution I'm afraid. If the trans. & cables could be made to be easily removed from your boat you could mount the trans in a foam block with vaso inside your kayak & have some way of bringing the cables up through the deck to the sounder head. A hole in the deck that a runner stopper, split with a sharp knife so it can be easily fitted over the cables would work. On a near-vertical surface so water won't pool & seep into the hull may be best, like in the front footwell, or down inside the front cupholder recess where you could pack closed-cell foam over the top to keep the water out.
An other way is to keep the trans & wiring all external & just take the battery wire through the deck into the more protected space inside the hull. Hang the trans. over the side on a suction cup arrangement like the portable fish finders use or mount it on a tube that fits through a scupper hole. Just remember it's hanging down there when you land. If you have a rudder on your P13 you may be able to mount the trans off the rudder bracket, like this...
It's getting messy though, especially if you have to muck around moving the trans wiring back & forth between boat & kayak. Maybe buying a new trans would be best but for $219.00 you could almost buy another f/finder to fit to your Prowler & leave the boat alone.
Just an idea or two...
