Soft Roof Racks

Hi all

I am hoping somebody can tell me how good or bad the soft roof racks are. I don't really want to pay $300 for a set of roof racks for my car (which I might sell in the not too distant future) and am unable to find secondhand racks that suit my car.

So I am thinking of buying some soft roof racks and tying the kayak to the soft racks and at each end of the kayak to the tow hooks on each end of the car. I have a Perception Swing on order... I believe it has points at both ends which I can safely use to tie the kayak to the tow points with? Is this a viable option??

Thanks

Oost

Re: Soft Roof Racks

Hi Oost,
Not sure how the soft racks would go - you wouldn't want your new swing bouncing down the road (expensive). They do have handles each end though but i wouldn't pull down too hard on these as i'm not sure weather you might end up with a bananna. Anyway have you thought of Thule racks? that's what i put my two swings on and you can just buy a new foot pack next time to suit the next car. Just a thought. hope it helps.
Phil.

Re: Soft Roof Racks

Hi Oost,

A short boat like the Swing doesn't really need bow & stern tiedowns like longer kayaks do. If you do use them, only just take the slack out of them... they are only there in case the main tiedowns loosen.

The soft racks do work buy you run the risk of damaging the car roof as the kayak's weight is supported in the relatively week middle section of the roof, rather than transferred down the much stronger edges. The kayak will also sit much closer to the roof so any fittings on the deck may touch the roof, as might the hull due to it's natural curvature.
