posticon I'm so excited.

Recently, I have been hiring a few different on-top kayaks to test my fitness (which is not high), to see if my back was up to the task and also to see if I enjoy the sport of kayaking. No shock then that I have decided to buy one ... with fishing in mind. After much deliberation I have gone for a Koastal Kayak Cruisader. Has anyone had any experience with such a craft? It seems to be a fairly new model.

Basically, I was restricted by the price of other similar but proven craft. This one was 900 odd (1100 after pfd and other extras) which is a killer for a student teacher like myself, but I hope absolutely worth it ... Life changing type of absolutely worth it, if you catch my drift.

I holiday often on the gold coast at Palm Beach - 19th ave - and often see the boats out in the morning on the local reef but have never fished there.

I know that at this stage I will be incapable of getting past a shorebreak and manouvering through other, bigger, ocean craft out at the Palm Beach Reef ... but that is my ultimate goal.

I pick up my new kayak on Monday Arvo after work (I'm actually working on the coast for another 3 weeks) and am going to take it nice and easy geting used to fishing in both Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks, where I have fished from ashore over the last 20 or so years.

I hope the swell might not be too bad at the entrance to Tallebudgera, so I might even attempt at some stage to paddle out into the big blue - given no offshore wind -paddle down to 19th avenue and get a mate to drive me back to my car.

I hope to be ready to attempt the breakers on a weekend after maybe two weeks of practice ... is this perhaps too hopefull?

I guess my naivity might be a little dangerous. All I know really is I should not attempt the surf with an offshore breeze and obviously when there is large surf.

As I look out my window now even though it's dark I can see that the surf is almost non-existant.

I note that at least one other person in the forum must fish Palmy, because I recognised the buildings in a photo of the bloke and his kayak.

Anyway, if anybody has some especially salient advice for my situation, I'd be really happy to hear it.

Cheers.

Miles.

Hi Miles .Congrats on getting your new kayak i myself paddle a sik. But now i am interested in getting a sot for fishing i have been paddling since febuary and i love it.being a tradesman i get a saw back from work and i thought the same thing that this would do my back in but i can paddle for hours without an ache. But when it comes to fishing i am a novice i cant help with any questions. But i tell you it doesnt take long to build your fitness if you go for a paddle atleast once or couple of weeks i am sure you will be fishing out on the reefs with the boys in no time. You are lucky because it looks like there is a strong crew of Members of this Forum who are up North. So have Fun

Re: I'm so excited.

Thanks for the reponse Ben. I have no idea why I haven't got into this sport yet ... Oh yeah ... the cost, that's right.

I'm not in a trade like you and historically I don't have a really bad back, but I injured it (small fracture) while playing the idiotic sport of indoor cricket in march when I tried to field off my own bowling like a 20 year old rather than a 30 year old. bugger. Starting to recapture the zest I had been missing and was a little worried about the rigours of paddling. The last two weeks of hiring have given me great confidence though.

I am so excited. My kayak though won't be ready till Tuesday now ... sigh.

Re: I'm so excited.

Gday Miles.

I almost bought a Crusader but went for a different yak at the last minute because at the time I wanted room to take my young son with me and the Crusader didnt really have the room. I dont think you will be disappointed with it, from memory it is a bit thinner in the thickness of the construction so just be careful how you tie it down and dont store it in the open.

If you are down the coast on Sunday you should head down to Kingscliff between 9&10am. There should be some guys from here heading in about that time hopefully with a good catch. You can say gday and also pick their brains a bit.

See you out there.

Darn it.

I'd like to get to Kingscliffe to have a chat and to check out some rigs, but I'd probably get lost or something. I would just look for the blokes with kayaks right. :-p

But I'm actually in Brisbane this weekend, which is where I'm based normally when I'm not at school doing my pracs, so sadly I reckon Kingscliffe is out of the question.

Also thanks for the words of wisdom from
everyone who responded to my post.

Cheers all and hope your having a good weekend.
