kayak Carts
Hi Guys I have recently uprgraded my kayaks from a cheapie (Adventure kayak Aust) to a couple of Perception swing expeditions (Mrs likes to paddle too). The Swings are much bigger and I have been thinking of getting some trollys/carts. Does perception make a viable (cost) one? does the Hobie general purpose one fit? What do you guys use? Should I just get off my rear and make one to fit the scupper holes? Thanks - will make carting fishing gear etc to water easier!

Gday Phil, welcome aboard.
Perception make a ripper to suit the swing but Im not sure of the cost. A PM to The Mariner or Billbob will set you straight.

Re: kayak Carts
Welcome to the forum Phil
Perception makes some sexy pull-apart carts that will fit your Swing starting at $212.00 RRP going to $235.00 RRP for one with wide wheels that fit in the scupper holes.
CoD make a fantastic HD stainless steel one with pneumatic wheels that doesn't use your kayaks scupper holes for around the same cost (incl. free postage) but it doesn't pull apart as much as the Perception one. The frame can be wiggled into the front hatch but the wheels will need to go into the tankwell.
Personally I'm not a fan of scupper-hole carts because the scupper can be the weakest part of the hull. If you are just carting the bare kayak it would be fine but because the cart allows you to load your kayak up with gear & use it as a trailer the loads being carried by the scuppers can be a lot higher.
I don't use a cart. I carry all my gear in a backpack, my kayak in my right hand by the moulded handle & my paddle & rods in my left. When at the water I distribute my gear into the hatches & stow the backpack.

Phil.

Re: kayak Carts
Mariner,
Great point about the scupper holes. I have had to pull the Quest up some steep banks and it does make you think about the pressure on your yak. The way I've found to get around some of the pressure is to clip my rope onto a bar at the bottom of the wheels and pull on that with one hand while I use the other on the handle. That feels like it removes a fare smount of pressure off both the scupper holes and the handle up the front (which on a Hobie is a toggle and some rope through a single eyelet). Still feels a little precarious at times but definitely makes it a bit better.
Good luck Phil.

Re: kayak Carts
Hi Phil
I built a PVC pipe cart that uses the scupper holes and it has worked well.
I pull the Cobra Explorer (18kgs plus fishing gear) about 500m to the water.
I used those red plastic rimmed wheels with the plastic bearings ($50ea) and about $50 worth of pipe, joins and glue.
I will email the plan I got off a US site, as I saved it in Word and cant find the link again.
Good luck

Re: kayak Carts
Thanks guys - hadn't thought of the scupper hole problem but it makes sense. After all the first one I bought leaked and had actually been repaired around the scupper holes! Not nice! But at least the local Kayak shop(reasonably local - at Newcastle) and perception(perception were a little less enthusiastic) were supportive and came to the party with a new one!
Phil - you said you carry it one handed by the handle - do you have a rudder system? mine does and feels like the handle is not at center of gravity. ie kayak feels bum heavy.
Ray - if you come across the plans I would be very interested.
Thanks again to all.

Re: kayak Carts
Hi Phil,
Thanks ! It's everyone here who makes this site what it is... I just started it all off.
No my Swing isn't ruddered but even without it it's a bit stern-heav, so with the rudder it would be worse. I have my fishfinder battery up front which helps to balance it when I take her down to the water.
There's instructions & pics to make a non-scupper post cart over at Kayak Fishing Stuff and another set of instructions & pics for a similar design over at Chris Oak's site.
Try to get the plastic hub wheels with plastic bush bearings for longer life.

Phil.

Re: kayak Carts
I came up with this idea as a temporary solution to carting a Cabo from car to the water. It's not the most transportable but for short trips locally does the job really well.
One cheap trolly, some rubber, 2 old camping mats and some crude engineering and we were in business. Total under $40.00.
Reasonably stable and keeps the kayak off the ground.

Re: kayak Carts
Thanks Neil,
Good idea mate - definately simpler than the one i'm building. Currently building a variation of one of the ones that was emailed to me. Thanks to all. I will post a piccie of the finished cart when done.

Re: kayak Carts
Hi Phil,
A variation of the 'Stern Sport' cart shown here would work well on a Swing as the bottom corner of the stern is super strong & this type of cart is about as compact as one can be.
